I was at the gas station today, and while I was paying I saw this in the penny bin next to the register. I remember a thread a few months ago and wonder if this too could be a "Black Beauty". 59-Black-Beauty? 59-Black-Beauty?

I put coins like this on my electric stove for a couple of minutes just to blacken them, then release them back into circulation just for the curious........! You can try this one at home, just use tongs, or your anonymus practical joke will backfire (burn) on you!

I doubt it. Whenever I go metal detecting I sometimes run across cupro-nickle coins that have been darkened/stained. Upon seeing the dirt on the reverse I believe that this is what has happened to this coin. Something must happen to them that causes them to turn this color while underground for long periods of time. Just a guess, though.

The orange color spots make me skeptical...here is a real black beauty for comparison.

So from what I understand, It's not really supposed to be black, but a dark gray?

The dull finish indicates environmental staining.

The key diagnostic for a Black Beauty is luster, a genuine one should have a nice cartwheel. Without luster, you just have to assume corrosion/environmental damage.
Rest in Peace
