I don't collect error coins, but I do enjoy finding them. If this coin is truly missing the copper plating, what's it worth to a collector? I can see some cartwheel luster on this one, so I don't think that the copper plating has been removed.

Thanks in advance for any and all responses.

Are you sure it's missing the copper plating or is it a brass plate? I think it's really cool. Congrats.

It looks more like clad or off metal.

A real cool find! Do you know the weight?

The weight would be a large help. If its 2.4375 grams, its only the zinc core. If its more than 2.5 grams, would mean its a plated zincoln.

I don't have a scale here. I'm hoping to show it to my local coin dealer sometime tomorrow and get his opinion. I'm planning on having him weigh it then.

Thanks for all the input/responses.

Weight will not be very helpful as the tolerance for a Zincoln is +/-2 grains which is ~0.13 grams. The best diagnostic is the luster which is abundant on your coin.

You have indeed found an unplated Zincoln, that is a very nice find. Completely unplated Lincolns are rarer than partially plated examples, I would estimate value at $50+.

In God We Trust.

Apparently, the Mint didn't trust their copper plating!

It might be well worth spraying this coin with with acrylic lacquer, then taking adequate steps the protect the lacquer coating. If that is done, the coin should look just as nice now, as it will in 50 years' time.

The coating is fairly easily removed with acetone later on, if you wish to change your mind.

I wouldn't spray the coin with anything (that just sounds like it would ruin it). It looks great as it is.

I wonder how the bare zinc (if it's authentic) is going to handle that fingerprint on the reverse...

I know it's been awhile, but I just found out that this coin is on it's way back to me from PCGS.

Struck on zinc planchet.

Graded MS66 RD?

I'll post some photos when I get it.

I would use acetone to remove contaminants then send it off to be graded and slabbed to keep it pristine. I know its value doesn't warrant it, but it is beautiful and actually pretty uncommon for that condition. Just say'n...
