Well last week I took a gamble and purchased this very nice 1858 Seated Liberty half dollar. I bought it for $61 the only problem is that it has some sort of counterstamp. I am no grader but ot seems to have AU details, I was hoping I could get some input on if I made a good purchace or not. Also your thoughts on the grade thank you.

I'd agree with AU.

As far as value, I think the counterstamp hurts. How much? That's an individual decision, different on every coin. If you're using it for the obverse in a type set, you've done great.

I agree with the AU grade ... AU-50. The c/s likely drops it to VF/XF money, I'd venture. At $61, there's not much of a downside for this otherwise pleasing type coin. An afterthought ... The c/s makes this coin highly identifiable, should the coin ever turn up missing!

I like counterstamps and I love how it's right in the middle of the shield. I'd be happy with that purchase.

I like it. The counter stamp is not very distracting and kind of adds a distinction like a Trade dollar. Wonder where it traveled to get this?

I agree, nice au and I like the counterstamp. If it was my coin, I wouldn't care if effected the grade. Thanks for sharing.

Well I'm glad every one seems to like it, I ussualy dont buy coins with PMD so I was nervouse. I just couldnt pass up such a nice coin. I did have to email the seller though, on the pics you couldnt tell what the counterstamp was and it kinda looked like a swastika, but he assured me it wasnt.

For $61 I'd barely be able to contain my laughter until I was out of the seller's earshot.
