What causes the shadowing as I have a 50c coin with a lot of it.

4.30AM today finished going through $500 of $1 coins. Found this one which I didn't have and quite a few 2005 mob of roos, a couple of 'nice' cracked planchets and just a couple of Cuds.

Thats a great find Larena! The $1 NCLT seem to turn up a bit probably because they are taken by pokies machines. we really need a noodling finds topic in the normal forum much the same as the recent purchases one.

Nice find Larena I have a relative in Queensland who has found a similar coin in his change. But it originated from Brisbane - I believe it was produced by a portable press at the Brisbane Agricultural Show. Quite scarce. Squire

Nice pick up larena. trout Pics as requested. Extra medal around the 5 and 0 and kangaroo leg. Pretty much like this right around the coin on any of the raised surfaces.

Quote: What causes the shadowing as I have a 50c coin with a lot of it. I'm pretty sure this is the result of a die being used until it's totally worn out. 2007 50c coins are really rife with it, and several other years as well, most CoA 50c since 2004, as well as CoF 2001.

Hi Nancy, I've been collecting this worn die error with the extra metal on the base of the shield for the 2007 50 cent (good to know the cause of the error now) and have also noticed occurs a lot on the 1999 50 cent coin. Not sure if I've seen it on other coins but if I have I might have thrown it back in because the effect was too light. Thanks for enlightening us on the mechanism for this error. TCH

just double checked my coins to make sure it was the 1999 cent coin and yes it is but the error is not as pronounced as in the 2007 coin

I have seen this error on various dates for the 50 cent coin. Will check my collection tonight (tonight's activities will also involve noodling through $20 of 20 cent pieces ). If the errors are good enough, will post pix of these here. Pictures of any unusual 20 cent finds will also be posted !. Squire
