So, I posted this over in the error coin subforum a while back. I'm not sure if grading error coins is even relevant, but I figured I'd post it over here anyway.

I'm assume that's PMD on the reverse.

What do you guys think?

FYI, it's a scan, not a photo.

I'd grade it 'Nice Error'

Yes, PMD on the reverse.

Grading error coins is important and their value will change based upon their grade. For a coin like that, you can't really go into detail on the BU grade for the obverse, so just stating it is BU or not is sufficient.

But it is hard to tell if there is any wear on the reverse, but if it isn't BU, it is very close to it.

I don't see much point in grading errors. Unlike a normal coin, the grade is by far secondary to the error itself- that is where the value is derived. Obviously, there can be a value difference between one error at VF and another that is BU but who cares if one error is MS60 while another is MS63? Does it really make that much difference in value like it would on a normal coin? I would have to say no. The error is the error, everything else is gravy.

As for the coin at hand, I would call it BU. It appears to have its original mint red color. The mark on the reverse could be damage but it could also be a scrap of the capped die that fell off and was struck through the reverse, the photo is not clear enough to tell either way.
