No! No more Walking Liberty love fest! What's the point? It's a classic, anachronistic design that had its day. I'd much rather see a beautifully modern coin design for the half. We have plenty of master sculptors, designers, and artists who could deliver something appropriate. (Trouble is, the mint is too dim-witted to understand this.)
That said, it's very doubtful that Kennedy would be taken off the half. In the old days, it was easy to change coin designs, as they were metaphorical images that had no historical or emotional import. Now that all our coins have presidents on them (save the Sacagawea), removing their visages becomes a political event and thus nearly impossible to get done.

While the Walkers are beautiful, they did have their run in circulation and live on in the ASEs. Same goes for all the old designs. While I love them, they had their days.
Keep the obverse and redo the reverse. I agree with the reverse proof. Something similar to the Lincoln cents in 09. Celebrate JFKs life ( I LOVE the PT idea for one reverse) with differing reverses then setlle on a new go forward reverse. Do it in a 4 or 5 coin set with the current coin being the reverse proof.
Unless they can come up with a stunning new Liberty design. And NOT that awful 9-11 Liberty. *barf*

That site is insane. It's a conglomeration of every late-night cable TV commercial gimmicky colorized/hologram-ized/plated/cheeze coin and bill ever made. Wow. Now I can get the other 55 colorized state/territory quarters to make a set out of the gift I was given a few years back...

How about a 1/2 oz. gold ( it is 50 years right ) Kennedy half in reverse proof with a reverse side of the coin having a sketch of the PT boat?

I think something like what they did with the 25Th anniversary of the ASE, a set of strikes, silver, reverse proof, maybe a gold coin; then retire the coin. We need a design more current with today's society, like something with the American Flag on it.

JFK halves have had a great life. I think they do some sort of set with a %90 unc, silver proof, and throw in the silver reverse proof. Then, the last coin in the set would be the 2014 unc clad. It would only be available in this set.
Keep the mintage low, make it a nice classy set.
Then, I would be in favor of a new design which went back to an alagorical theme. Something classic, please nothing sleek or futuristic. Anything liberty would be refreshing.
Oh, then they should ditch the paper dollar, the penny and nickel. I would like to see some sort of new design on the dime which correlated with the new half and also went to a liberty design. Finally, there should be a huge push for dimes, quarters, halves and dollar coins to be our main daily small currency. I think its a shame that halves really arent used. It makes sense to me to get rid of the penny and nickel and start using the halves again.
Cool thread!

I say stop minting the half dollar altogether. For such a large coin, they could have made it look nicer and put better details on it.

What disaster? I think they did it just right......arghhhhh.....why oh why don't people get it? "Limited edition" and "everyone gets one" are mutually exclusive terms. I say if they do a Kennedy set, limit it to 100,000 sets. 5 per household

I think it might be more suitable to think about a special edition for 1917 -- the centennial of JFK's birth -- after which I would support a new, non-Kennedy design. (I've never been a big supporter of new coins to commemorate existing coins.) For the special edition, I like the thought of maintaining the current portrait obverse and having a reverse that is emblematic of JFK's presidency -- the idea of the moon landing theme sounds good to me. I think also the maximum mintage should be high enough (maybe 250,000 to 300,000) and with a household limit of no more than 2 such that those with an interest have at least a reasonable chance of acquiring the coin without having to pay "immediately inflated" secondary market prices. I don't believe that a coin honoring such an important figure in US history has to be a quick-turn, profit opportunity for those fortunate enough to be first on line. (And no, this view isn't sour grapes over the ASE 25th Anniversary set -- I had little to no interest.) Of course, that's IMHO!

Quote: What disaster? I think they did it just right Then either you got enough sets or you had no intention of buying one. There were so many complaints to the US Mint, they are spending a ton of money to improve their online ordering system. And you say they still did it just right? And you are confusing limited edition to those sets with low mintages that no one wants. The JFK set would probably set a bigger demand than the 25th ASE set. There is no reason to put a mintage limit on the set. The only people that want one are the ones that want to make a huge profit on it. If it is to commemorate something, then let everyone buy as many as they want and have a chance to own one. Plus there are people in India and other countries that loved JFK and highly praised him, that would buy one too. It isn't just this country that liked JFK.

I vote with Condor........ end the production of them altogether. Let the coin go into "history" as Kennedy himself will always be. For the Anniversary.......and the last ones ever minted, I'd say a nice 5 coin Set would be a good send-off. Do the P mintThe D mintThe ProofThe Silver ProofThen just copy the successful 1998 Matte Finish Proof. This coin still holds a really nice premium ! ( $250.00-$300.00) And most moderate to casual Kennedy collectors have them all EXCEPT this coin, which was only available in the special Commemorative Set of that year. Making these five coins a "Set", and exclusive to the "Set".....similarly to the ASE anniv. set.....but with, perhaps, much less craziness ! Four of the coins would only be "exclusive" to this Set, if they were certified as such by a TPG in an unopened box.....like the ASE Sets, since they could be purchased in the regular yearly Sets. And I just don't think "the fever" would be there for these, like the ASE's. For one.....they wouldn't be all "Silver"...so there's that. Second.....there would only be "one" special coin really. And thirdly..... there just aren't THAT many Kennedy collectors out there, at least comparatively to the ASE's anyway. IMO, Kennedy certainly was "popular".....but if you look....he really didn't serve very long before he was killed, so his "accomplishments" are not all that numerous. And some say "he" is the one who got us involved in the Vietnam War in the beginning, when the French pulled out and Communism was spreading.....but anyway. I just mean that I don't know that this man should be put "up there" with some of the greatest Presidents of all time to serve. The Kennedy "family" has certainly done more public service than any other......but we're just simply talking about the Presidency and importance of the small portion of time he actually served. I just think this coin has served it's purpose....commemorated the man.......and it's time to go into history now, like all coins must do at some point.

A return to Liberty should have new designs. Quote: I think it might be more suitable to think about a special edition for 1917 -- the centennial of JFK's birth... I agree, celebrating birth is preferable to death. I think I may have mentioned this before. I would like to see a Kennedy Coin and Chronicles set, with a Commemorative Dollar like GR58 suggests.
