Very nice find! Does the coin really look that banged up or is that just the photo being out of focus with glare?

It is actually a little of both, the surface scratches from wear are exaggerated by the magnification and the glare from the shiny surface.

Here is a shot using sunlight, the focus is correct on it, but the reflectivity of the surface still amplifies the small scratches.

Nice ... I've scored two Proof 50 State Quarters to date from change ... always a nice find.

Nice find! I wonder why anybody would break out proof coins and use them for change?

The only proof I ever found in circulation was a 1973 half back in 1976

People don't know or don't care and just see it as money to spend. Sometimes the sets are stolen and then broken open and cashed.

It is simple ignorance. Either a crook or an heir does not know, or does not want to bother (especially the crook who does not want to get caught).

That makes sense. I don't think any collector paying much over fv to add these sets to their collection would brake them apart just to use for change.

More times than not its your piece of junk drug addled sister stealing the proofs from your fathers collection so she can get some more drugs or beer or smokes. Not bitter, just sayin....

Oh, awesome find! I have rescued one proof WVA from circulation myself.
