You already seem to have a "fair" idea of what the grades are on your coins, because the grandmother had them written on them already. Sure, they may be a little off, and if you sell it would be to your benefit to get specific grades for your coins, but you should be fine with just the Red Book. You will learn and be able to look up and find which coins are the key dates and which ones are worth significantly more than others. So I wouldn't say it's foolish for not getting it. Though, I highly assume you will eventually find great joy with these coins and you will eventually buy many coin books to read. Good things, Ty p.s. I love that 1794 large cent. Very nice.

Thanks for the encouragement, everyone. Much appreciated!
Just posted pics of all the loose 2x2s I could find. At the end of the list is a little ancient coin. Any ideas?

maryhm, may I make a suggestion....I am no a 'grader' and there are lots of members here who are. However, in determining to grade and identify your collection it is difficult with small images. I'd suggest to make them larger and not too much background. Like this on your web site: Image Insert: : Just wanted to help... Image Insert:

I'm in a very similar rural situation in Arizona with the nearest Barnes and Noble 440 miles round trip way up in Flagstaff. I'm sure there's one in Phoenix, probably around the university district, but life is not worth the risk of driving in Phoenix traffic. That would be the nearest location of a coin shop also. I've never been to a Starbucks. Easiest explanation is that I don't drink coffee, but AFAIK Starbucks are only in cities and I don't do cities either. Mary, keep those coin pics coming! I don't think I'll ever tire of looking at them! Fred

Just added 2 new sections "Foils" and "Tokens". Next, I'm tackling a bunch of forgein coins! http://www.monshaugenfamily.com/coins.htmMina- Are you clicking each picture to view the larger picture? I'm not a whiz with my digital camera, and just getting any shot that isn't yellow or whited out is a challenge right now! After I get this general catalogue compiled, then I'll start research and if there are coins I want graded or have questions about, then I'll put forth some extra effort to get some better pics. Right now, I'm just overwhelmed with the amount of coins and trying to get them organized! Jim- We do have a Starbucks, but I don't drink coffee so I could care less. I'd prefer they take out the Starbucks and put in a Macy's. ;) Fred- What area of AZ are you in (if you don't mind me asking)? Glad you're enjoying the pics! Posts like yours are what keep me going through the 54th vial. ;)

Thanks for the welcome! Everything I've gone through so far has a pic and description on the site. Next is forgein coins, because I need a change(pun unintended, but appropriate!). Then it's back to US- lots of stuff wrapped in rolls and in little bags that say "US Mint". Goodness only knows what's in there- maybe some flying eagles! We'll just have to keep an eye out.

Mary, I'm in a tiny (35 units on 40 acres) semi-boondocking RV park in the middle of the desert about 60-70 miles east of Quartzsite. Exit 69 off I-10 if you're familiar with the area. Not near anything, but our PO is Salome, about 25 miles WNW of us. No neighbors, just open range cattle, rattlesnakes, and an occasional wild burro.

Just updated with a lot of really cool foreign coins. Need ID's on some Oriental ones if anyone is an expert in that area.

Fred- I've actually been through Quartzite driving between California and Texas several times. I thought I lived in the middle of no where, but you have me beat! I just finished posting the last of the coin pictures- US Mint Bags to the end. I ended up with 2102 coins!! Unbelievable!! The last thing I'll add will be paper currency, and I'll get to that next week. http://www.monshaugenfamily.com/coins.htmFor those of you who were following my Visit from the Sheriff thread and wondered where it went, it got moved to here: https://goccf.com/t/11488

Just when I thought I was finished...
I was going through some of grandma's boxes looking for old pictures to show her. I found a Sam Houston cigar box and thought it was kind of cool. When to pick it up and man, was it heavy! Guess what? About 35 more rolls. At least I'll have something to keep me busy this afternoon. My husband says God only knows how much was stolen from her house, because it had been vacant for the past 6 years and was vandalized a few times.

That is a really nice collection she accumulated over the years. My own opinion is that I wouldn't sell any of the coins. I might sell or trade duplicates to obtain more coins to add to the collection but that is about it. This is only what I would do.

Irishraider- That's actually the plan. Once I finish with the catalogue, then I'm going to go back and start researching the coins by type. I'll keep the best few specimens of each date/mint and sell the duplicates to fill in the holes in the collection. Should be a lot of fun! I'm starting with the Morgans next week.

Unvelievable. What a group of coins. I can't believe you have so much. It's just so massive. I can't wait for you to post pics of your currency. I love collecting currency and have lots of it. Thanks for the pics, Ty
