Those 4-4-0 trains were a workhorse of the South. This is "The General" in completely restored condition and on display in Kennesaw GA, at the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History.

Thanks, Coinfrog and jbuck!
@Jimjumper, I do love that train on this note. Thanks for the pic of the restored one, it's a real beauty!

The General was a train stolen by Union soldiers early in the Civil War and chased down by its Conductor, among others, aboard a sister train named the Texas. The Union soldiers that made the attempt were the first recipients of the Medal of Honor. I do a lecture on the whole story and have one of only 3 complete series/denomination sets of the Western and Atlantic change notes. My avatar is one of those notes.

That's quite interesting, I'll have to read up on that a bit.

I've always been a fan of The Republic of Texas notes. I've always liked $3 notes, too! This is kinda the best of both worlds for me!

I believe it is a Medlar #23 issue date of May 5, 1841. Typical repaired cut-cancels, but all-in-all not too bad !

Very interesting note, westernsky! Even with the issues you described, I find it fairly appealing.

Here's a note I received today. I've been looking for a nice-looking $5 Educational the past year or so, and with the prices on AU and CU notes really going up I decided to target a VF-XF circulated note. My main criteria were that it be a clean note without heavy folds, and that it be in a comment-free holder. This one fit those criteria. What looks like a "3" in the lower right back margin appears under magnification to be a heavier thread in the paper, but I may be mistaken.

Thanks, jbuck and Hondo! I'm very pleased with it; normally I put my new acquisitions into my binders or boxes once I've taken my pictures, but this one is still sitting on my desk for me to look at a bit more...

@hokiefan; That's a real beauty, and one I am on the lookout for, before they go any higher. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, mfhorn! This past year I've bid on a couple AU examples on Heritage, only to see the bidding go quite a bit higher than I was willing to pay. I decided to lower my sights a bit and was pleased to see this one show up in a favored dealer's inventory. Still somewhat pricey compared to what these were going for only a couple years ago, but I'm happy to finally have one to complete my Educational Note set!
