Technically, a retail store is not forced to accept legal tender for a transaction. If Walmart demanded you pay for your TV with gold bars, that is their right, and if you don't want to buy it, you can put it back. Legal tender only applies to debts and taking the TV to the register does not mean you have a debt. It gets a little more interesting with things you can't put back though, like gasoline purchases and restaurant bills.

Yea if you can't put it back then it is a debt. If it is a debt, then they must by law take legal tender for it.
I wonder how often people refuse to take money though?

Work in a retail store and looked in penny drawer and saw all bright and shiney wheat pennies 1954s. Grabbed them up only came up with 46. I looked over at another roll in change compartment and it was labled 1960d. All these appear to be uncirculated. Told my cashier and she looked in her drawer and came up witha half of a roll of 1954
wheaties.

While searching through a box of dimes this morning looking for silver, I found this French Oceana 50 centimes;

I'm not real thrilled about having paid a dime for it, but it is kinda cool.

I picked up about $200 worth of halves at various banks while in the Bay Area yesterday. There was just a single 1964 silver half in the lot (which is of course good) but not a single 40% silver or anything else worth keeping. I brought the bag of rejects to my bank and ran them through the coin counter. The machine was making a funny noise after the count was complete so I lifted the lid and found a gold ring in the chamber! Apparently someone had previously dumped a jar of coins without realizing the ring was in there. It's a tiny ring weighing just a few grams, but I guess I could say I found gold while roll hunting!

Halves have long been my favorite to search, but I was thinking I might try searching Dollar rolls for a change, with a goal to find some of the better-date Sacs (2002-08). Technically these weren't released for circulation, but I imagine many have been spent / cashed in anyway. I'd be curious to find out.

New Guy here...CRH seesm very interesting. I started with buying rolled dimes from my local credit union, and have found two silver in the past month, searched about $500-600 so far and rewarded with a 1963 and 1964 rosies, great shape too. I ordered some boxes of halves, they aren't in yet. Here is my question. I went to a another credit union that I know has halves, but since I wasn't a member, they wouldn't sell any to me. Do regular banks require you to have an account to buy rolled coins...? I'm gonna give it try latter on today and still debating joining that other credit union...thanks for any input...

just got a very nicely toned 1941 Wheatie in EF40 or AU50 in a roll today. A 1972 Jefferson nickel that's close to E40 also. I'm hooked on roll hunting but I only do small amounts. I take my dumps to my saving bank so the cost is non existant.
