QUESTION:

just because they killed production for 2013 does that mean they wont be making any 2014? (sorry I didnt read the article yet)

they havent demonitized it? just not making any next year correct?

didnt they do similiar things with production of the loonie on certain years?

They are not producing anymore - period. They will stop sending rolls to banks in the fall of 2012. Then as banks receive them in from their customers, they will be pulled from circulation, returned to the mint for scrap.

I will miss the penny it is the cheapest way to get people into collecting who can't afford to get into silver right off the bat. Also the mint has already started the replacement coins for the current ones and nobody is complaining to date it's the 20 for 20 coins. Everyone talks about the 5 and 10 turning into coins when the 20 already has.

Half Cent still legal tender in the US? Is that a proper analogy? Even if you had a bucket full, no one would recognize them and they would MAYBE buy you a pack of gum.

.

but without officially demonitizing them it is possible (though very unlikely) that production could be returned? or is this just the typical first step in demonitizing?

It may be practical, but from a collectors point of view, it surely is sad to see the penny go.

Earle => I totally agree => the penny is truly the work-horse of the poor man's collection!

My Granny got me collecting pennies 40+ years ago ... since then, I have consistently plugged every single year's one cent into my original rickety ol' album ... so, it is really quite an emotional blow hearing that I won't be doing that ritual anymore ! (*sigh*)

=> we salute you, Penny!

=> that'll do pig ... that'll do!

What about the tax system?
It sounds to me that what you're saying interferes with the 2012 cent production.

Sorry to here about this. My grandson has started collecting the pennies. We come across them doing roll searching down here in the States.

He only has 28 holes to fill in his Whitman folders from 1922 to date. Most of them are recent ones.

Libertad: Not only are Half Cents still legal tender, but the Coinage Act of 1965 actually remonetized the Trade dollar (the only us coin ever demonetized). It also gave legal tendar status to all coins made by the mint, which had the effect of making pattern coins legal tender as well where as before they had a dubious legal tendar status.

Just a reminder, that thread would need to be in the appropriate forum.

Opps, they did it again! The penny maybe toast but there is now an interesting final note to the cent. I just got a non-magnetic 2012 thick planchet cent on a roll of magnetic cents. The magnetic are much thinner. Anyone else out there find one of these yet?
