Sweet indeed! First Japanese bullion I've ever seen! So, is the "420 GRAINS. Trade dollar. 900 FINE" simply for historical purposes? Is the coin actually .999 fine silver? Not that it matters. The coin is very beautiful, and very Japanese: the iconic Chrysanthemum Flower Seal is unmistakable. Very nice!

Coin comes with numbered COA: got two for two coins: 0486 and 0487. It is stated there that it is 999 silver. As of COA, the design and "420 grains..." sign is for historical purposes in order to copy the actual coin.
P.S. As you've noticed it is encapsulated ... but in addition they are sealed in holder. That's why the quality of picture is not that great.

bekiz,
So is this considered a medallion; not actual currency, since it's not denominated in yen?

Wow, I really like that. I have several old Japanese coins with the dragon on them and find this modern version calling for a place in my collection too.

traevin I'd say yes, it's medallion because the coin doesn't have legal tender in Japan. Price is like you pay for 4 bullion coins. Let's see how it will be represented in International Coin Convention in Tokyo this May. As of denomination in yen, once, 100 years ago here was the very same coin design, just the metal was not that pure (it was actually 420 grains, and the coin weighted about 27 g.) Do not know much of history of the japanese Trade dollars as I am not up into japanese coins.

Great piece Bekiz nice pickup. Interesting to note 420 grains via 90% which sounds right, as 1 troy oz. contains 480 grains....

B,
I've seen this coin come up for auction a time or two. Not sure if it was this particular medallion or a different date. But truth is, I actually thought it was Chinese, so I never researched it. Too afraid of getting a non-silver "silver" coin, if you know what I mean.

T. I know what you mean - avoiding chinese coins as much as I can myself. I bought this coin from this store: http://www.fujimint.com/Shop/shop_list.aspreputable seller I'd say. COA is made with the japanese way of making things: it has kind of protection ribbon within the paper, like in paper money. I plan to list one of the coins on ebay, so when I'll take some pictures for listing I'll bring them here as well.
