I'm new here and got here googling to try and see if there was an image anywhere on-line for this new release. I'm not sure I'm going to be happy with it either.

Just an FYI on something I got from someone at the mint. Yes, the coins have a face value of $20 but are not really legal tender because stores and banks are not obligated to take them. I had thought banks would take them before talking to the mint. Maybe I should confirm with a bank (the mint may just be covering their butt). You could probably sell to a collector for face. Otherwise worth less then half their face value in silver. So 20 for 20 is misleading. Not like some of their quarter/loonie/toonie releases which are at par.

That being said, I would have got the first 3 anyway because I like them. May have to nix the queen though

Looking forward to the coin. 20$ isn't a big deal, but I'm kind of getting tired of all the jubilee coins. All the mint needs to do is release a coin with the queen riding a dragon and they'd be set for 2012.

Does anyone recall how the release of the previous $20 for $20 commemorative coin went exactly?

I'm curious because I find it odd that subscribers are being notified that the new $20 for $20 Diamond Jubilee commemorative coin has been released and there's not a single news announcement, let alone a hint, of such a popular coin series on mint.ca. I was actually wondering if the email we received wasn't released accidentally and prematurely. Thoughts?

Can somebody confirm this? This was not my understanding with NCLT coins. The LT stands for Legal Tender, after all.

Yes, they are legal tender, but I remember some people trying to spend earlier releases at places like Tim Hortons and they wouldn't take them. It's odd that a bank wouldn't take them though.

Yea Tim Horton's I can understand - the average employee is not going to have seen one of those and will be suspicious. I suspect that's even true of your average bank teller. But that doesn't mean that they are not SUPPOSED to take them. I think the only way to test it would be to go to one of the big banks downtown maybe...?

I can't imagine anyone accepting less than face value for any coin.

I understand that subscriptions have a slight priority over MC, but I would expect MC to be notified before they go public.

Also, I'm not impressed that I get an e-mail telling me coins are practically in the mail yet I have not been given the opportunity to see the product and decide whether or not I want to cancel the order. That's a real possibility since the last 24/20 did not giving the same ROI as the first one did and no telling what the design might be this time; the Queen riding a dragon was a good suggestion but unlikely.

I can't help but get a feeling that the Mint is potentially trying to sneak these into our pockets before we get a chance to cancel the order. If they were really proud of this coin, they would be advertising it already. I don't know why the design is so secret.
