Quote: And as Conder101 mentioned. Ever notice how everyone says Kleenex when they must mean tissues. Or go make a Zerox of this when most use almost anything but Zerox. Look up genericized trademark. Quote: Something to keep in mind, VHS and TAPE backup is cheap, storage arrays are not. Up front maybe, but two additional costs to consider are convenience and maintenance. When considering total cost of ownership, digital handily beats the analog systems.

Quote: SD, I sure hope they get your $100 back to you. I'd be super upset if it were me. that's like 2 months worth of gas for me. You only use $100 worth of gas every 2 months? Dam I wish I could do that, I spend $80 a week in gas

@fenton
like I said, I was in a hurry.
i think the thing that I got confused on was when I asked for $200 in dimes, she came back and nodded her head and said OK I have it.. so thinking she had the $200 I put the cash under the bullet proof window and didnt think anything of it when I got my dimes... I clearly remember only getting $100 in dimes, but in that situation, it happened so fast...

Hopefully & eventually something good may come of all this. Quote: hey, hey carl... Xerox, Xerox... just sayin'sall OK, OK so I messed up spelling as usual. Just goes to show that after 2 degrees in college, still can't spell. As to safety from banks and credit accounts, I use 5 different banks. When I opened one and they asked if I had any other accounts anywhere, I always said no. I have 5 different credit cards and no balances on any of them so the credit card places should notice any unusual monitary occurances. And they do. BOA cancelled one of my cards when someone attempted to post an unusual amount to that number. I like to play it safe after so many people I know have gone through identity thefts. One coulple I know have been spening a real lot of money fighting such situations that happened to them. One person I know found that their savings account had been cleaned out by persons unknown. I always say it is better to be safe than sorry. But back to the missing $100. I can only hope it all ends well.

Quote: How, may I ask, did you not realize that she had given you 10 dime rolls instead of 20? Should have been pretty obvious IMHO. I can understand a mistake if a teller gives you 5 twenty dollars bills instead of 10 but coin rolls are heavy. I found that interesting, too. The OP thinks the difference between five and ten notes should be obvious, yet he missed 7# of dimes, which take up the space of a pound of candy. Not accusing anyone of anything, just trying to get a hold on what's involved.

Quote: When considering total cost of ownership, digital handily beats the analog systems. My wife used to work at an insurance company. They'd microfilm all claims paperwork, and put the originals in fireproof storage. They'd use computers to tell them what roll and document image to find. Digital storage costs about 1/10,000th what it did then, I suspect they now digitize originals, and have the nincompute bring up files as needed.

SDcoinguy: I have briefly scanned the whole thread to date.
You WILL be able to recover your money, IF you can prove it is yours, irrespective of who made the mistake.
At the end of each day, each teller as part of their normal duties, is required to do a reconciliation to make sure that all moneys in, equal all moneys out, something like double entry book keeping, which is a standard accountancy practice.
In this case, IF there is an imbalance, that imbalance has to be explained by the cashier. If the imbalance cannot be explained to whom it should be credited to, it is stored in a reserve account, so that the cashier's daily account can achieve reconciliation.
You need to approach the manager of the bank and explain your case, with evidence that the missing $100 is yours. If your evidence matches theirs, they will be happy to reimburse you, with a smile and a handshake, and maybe even an apology.
What is required is that the record of your account matches the 'hole' in the cashiers account, on the day the transaction was made.

The longer the jury is out, the worst it is for the plaintiff. This does not look good. I predict the tapes will come back as "inconclusive." As with the NFL, it's not enough to over rule the call made on the field and the bank will not pay out the C-note (or come up with an additional 7 more pounds of dimes). Insert Law & Order (ping- pong noise). Lots of Life Lessons learn ..now back to the real world and putting food on the table.

And how much will the storage engineer cost to maintain the Array? If you get him cheap about 70k / year. And that's just for someone who can manage a Netapp array. Let alone an actual SAN. A consumer grade NAS wont have the capability to keep up that much video recording, and wont be able to manage the required space. Another thing to consider is how finicky storage arrays can be. (unless we are talking Fiber channel, not FCoE) Tape back up systems don't have many issues, and a trained monkey can cycle out the tapes for a pittance of wages. Source - I'm a Network engineer. :P I will say though, I have absolutely zero idea what the history requirements are for security footage for a bank. A week, a month? no clue... If they cycle footage on a daily basis and only keep required segments for related incidents, then it really doesn't matter what they do, Consumer grade NAS or full tape back up. But any enterprise NAS / Array has far higher upfront and Operation cost (CapEx / OpEx) than a tape system ever will. Plus its really cheap and easy to outsource the management of your Tape system. Don't even get me started on how terrible outsourced storage, or 'cloud storage' *shudder* is.

Quote: You only use $100 worth of gas every 2 months? Prius... I get like 55 mpg. :D I get about 2.5 - 3 weeks out of a tank, and it cost 40 to fill up from empty. It was worth trading in my Man card. LOL

Yep everyday. 32 miles round trip.
55 mpg x 10 gallon tank - 550 mile tank
550 mile tank / 32 miles a day = 17.18 days on a tank
with gas at $4/gal (seattle) it cost me about $40 ever 17 work days, though I call it 12.5 - 15 to account for going to the store, seeing friends, doing stuff on weekends, etc.
Totally worth it. And the Prius itself is not an expensive car, and I got the model with the Navigation screen built in.

This assumes an honest cashier. If she took in $200 and put $100 in her pocket, her drawer will balance. Another possibility is the OP put $100 somewhere accidentally and forgot about it. Or it could have fallen on the floor, and no one noticed. Many possibilities, not all of which are deliberate malfeasance.

Quote: I predict the tapes will come back as "inconclusive." As with the NFL, it's not enough to over rule the call made on the field The possible outcomes are "overturned" (evidence shows he is right), "confirmed" (evidence shows bank is right), or "stands as called" (no evidence for or against either party). Quote: And how much will the storage engineer cost to maintain the Array? ...Plus its really cheap and easy to outsource the management of your Tape system. Maybe I should have mentioned that digital video surveillance is one of the products sold and installed by my employer (and we use what we sell) so I have that advantage. If our customers had to hire someone to maintain the product, then we are not doing our job.
