I was looking on some coin forum sites and am interested in a certain coin however before I do purchase the interesting coin I was wondering how much any coin is worth based upon the particular grading company. If a coin is graded say MS 65 is the coin really downgraded in value depending upon whom graded the coin, and down the grading company really play a factor in what a coin is worth?

The reason that I posted the question here was that the coin that I was looking at is a 1936s Buffalo nickel. Don't know if I can say the TPG grading company or not.

Company does matter to an extent for sale/resale price if that is your concern. PCGS currently carries a premium on most sites for most coins then NGC then ANACS and ICG. NGC and ANACS can be the ones carrying the premium on much older coins.

You can get nice coins from any of them especially the first three I have no experience with IGC and cannot speak for them, and could build a cheaper collection of the same quality staying away from PCGS assuming you dont find a bargin.

Most other companies/basement slabbers seriously overgrade everything and you should just treat as a raw coin in terms of price.

In terms of the particular coin you are looking at I'm not sure which company would carry the premium, you could try google and just put the coin and its grade in and check and see which companies ones are selling the highest

The first question to ask....does the COIN make the grade on the Obverse AND the Reverse.

I don't care WHO the TPG is....the coin is what you are after.

The reason that I asked was that when I looked at the coin slabbed by ANACS and is described as problem free in MS65 with a Yellow label (not sure what that means) the price when compared to a popular on-line reference site appears to be priced between a 65 and a 64 and is sounding like a good deal.

I believe that an ANACS yellow label is a older label and as such could be a accurate reflection of the coin grade. From the pictures provided on the site the coin does appear to be in line with what the little Red Book says. I think that I have to start trusting in my reference material.

When I started with this hobby awhile ago I did buy a coin graded by ICG and didn't have the reference material I do now and was somewhat overcharged for a ICG green label 1878 CC Morgan.

Look at wholesale pricing and stick with major TPG (PCGS, NGC, ANACS). Half way between the retail price of a 65 and 64 might not be such a good deal, although it's likely reasonable. What is the price?

ANACS yellow labels are the most current and newest graded coins, the last color was blue, before that they had the smaller holders in white, before that the small holders and a background label with ANA logo on it.

For the record coins graded lately by ANACS seem to be more strict than PCGS the past 12 months or so, IMO.

Sight unseen is always a risk, I'm sure me saying this is redundant. I've always bought coins I could hold in my hand, but to each their own. Good luck!
