If you had to pay 1/2 penny for some goods and only had a penny then you cut it in half. Remember that they were Silver and worth their Silver weight.
They were also worth quite a lot in spending terms; you could buy an awful lot with a penny in those days and it's unlikely that the poor would have seen that many of them.
Mike.

I have a couple of these half pennies and I've wondered about this for some time. How did they cut them in half? The cut is almost perfect. I would think that a lot of folks were poor and did not own tools.

More likely it was done my the merchants or they had it done by the local blacksmith.

Thanks t360. You've sparked my curiosity though. What makes it very interesting?

Yea that is pretty cool, looks like it was double struck/miss struck. I honestly don't know a lot about these coins as I typically collect early milled coins (1660-1812), but I've always been fascinated with them and have always wanted one simply for the history.

Great detail on that one, bryan10au!
Looks like the reverse legend is HENRI ON LVNDE (Henri at London).

Cut coins are very numerous.1/2's & 1/4's.I've even got a cut groat. The longcross was added to prevent clipping during Henry 111's reign.Edward 1 then introduced 1/2 d's and tiny farthings.
