This came in the mail today. I am thrilled. While a few exist in higher grades, the ones I have seen do not have the colour and lustre of this one. Rare to get them free of carbon spots too. My apologies with the photos, the coin was photographed through two layers of plastic. I tried to fiddle with the best light - despite the outcome, the reverse and obverse are the same colour - 100% red. When you factor in original lustre, colour and grade - this is the best one I have seen yet. Try and guess the grade...

Due to the "2 x plastic coating" it is difficult to say? ... I'm having a difficult time knowing what is a coin scratch and what is merely a shine from the plastic? (however, the colour is absolutely fantastic!!) => sorry, but I'm gonna low-ball ya and say that it's an EF45 to AU50 ... "ish" ... oh, and don't try getting all "geology" on me ... it is probably just the plastic-coating that is causing the less-than-perfect appearance ... It's a beautiful coin!! ... (tri-drooler)

I do not feel qualified at present to take a guess at the grade but wanted to chime in with my own...

I guess the reverse at MS-65 and obverse at MS-64 (few scratches and bag marks).It does not make the 2012 ICCS Population Census with the top 3 being MS-66 and 45 MS-65 but like we all say,BUY THE COIN not the holder.Nice looking RED

I would say AU-50? Just because of the bag marks.... but really a beautiful coin!

You have to remember that photos can bring out the best of coins... and the worst of coins... Some of the marks you see are also on the plastic flip. Also ICCS tends to be a bit more "forgiving" with contact marks in George V effigies, for all denominations, than say Elizabeth II coins. Preview any auction lot, and you will be surprised what ICCS grades as "MS-65 red"
This coin sat dormant in a collection for more than a decade. It is in an ICCS MS-65 holder, with the old style embossed paper certificate (which most dealers and collectors consider to be the early, conservative days of ICCS). I have seen two of the three MS-66 that ICCS has certified, but both of those coins were not as strong in original colour as this one.
With lots of certified ICCS MS-65 coins in the census report to pick from, I definitely bought the coin, not the holder, at a small premium above Trends... While it is a nice coin, I suspect it would grade PCGS MS-64Red. I simply cannot bring myself to pay the ridiculous prices that a PCGS MS-65 Red would command, like you see in the top registry sets.

While not a new purchase, I just imaged this one to send to a friend. As I am about to be on the selling side of a table with a good friend at Toronto Coin Expo in Sept., for the first time......gulp.....so many seconds and thirds to go thru.....this one is also in 2 layers of plastic. Any guesses?

Mikey - I'm going to say 66. Even under the toning, I can see no hits. I think the weakness in the braid and the bottom leaves is a slightly mushy strike. If I'm way off I'll blame the plastic and your photo skills. Plus it isn't red and shiny. :))

wow ... geesh, those good ol' old Vickys are by far my favourite coins!!
Again, I find it difficult to grade a coin through a photo (especially a photo of acoin within a plastic film) ... but you asked for it, so I will guess
=> AU55 to MS60
... oh, and for the record I think coins with gorgeous toning are prettier than coins with a blast-white finish
=> magnificent coin!!

hey-hey-hey, dawg => I prefaced/foreshadowed that it is difficult to accurately rate the "grade" of a coin with merely a flimsy photo as a guide ...
NOTE => it is very similar and just as difficult as deciding whether "that girl over there" is a 5, or if she's a total 10, once the "last call for alcohol" lights have flickered on and off in the bar ... it's a total crap-shoot!!
nickelsguy => my bad, I didn't mean to offend ... I think the coin is an absolute "doll"
