THE RCM made a set of coins that contained a 1953 Cent in full red unc back in 2003 and the supplies of the cents came from a major hoard apparently sold to the RCM by a major Canadian Coin dealer. I think what the mint is probably doing is akin to what Steve Bromberg does on the home shopping channel. They will just cull out BU dollars from the melts they are sent by major dealers or phone all there good dealer customers and offer a very enticing buy price for coins for the sets. RCM has a very good reputation around the world so these will sell. One thing I have noticed at the last few coin shows we have sold at is the amazing amount of people who are NOT coin collectors putting together a Silver Dollar set from 1935-1967 and even the Nickel dollars from 1968-1987. Sales for us and others have been great to say the least. I for one am onboard with the mint on this one, it just might make the set buyers try to find the rest of the series and NOT just the commems.

to make things more interesting, RCM should offer a 1935-1967 silver dollar album to every subscriber

I wouldn't touch this one with a 10-foot pole. Without a grade, all bets are off. Except for 1935, all lower grades sell close to junk silver on ebay. As I just looked, even certified, some higher grades fetch less than $60. I'm looking at actual auctions; not the "buy now". One positive aspect is that the buyers can be relatively certain that these silver coins aren't make in China. I mean the RCM should be able to tell the difference, right? Regardless, in my opinion the resale value is next to nothing. All you'd have to do is procure the case and stuff it with whatever you can get your hands on. Unless its a VERY expensive case......

Along with the mystery grade, I would fear that they will have been processed/polished to give them the "new" look just like the framed coin collections from 25 years ago or any collection offered on the Shopping Channel.

If the RCM rep ever came back to the forum he/she would be ripped to shreds. That's likely why he/she is gone. Too many delays, inconsistencies, scams coming out of the RCM to fly well with collectors that know anything about the hobby at all.

I don't see any real value besides the silver content and the box. Condition can vary on the coins and if the mint is looking to profit from this set, they will certainly cut corners.
That is my 2 cents.

I recently ordered this set. I will report back to this thread when I get the first coin (if the RCM manages to ship the first coin). I do not have a digital camera available to me at this time; however, I do have a digital scanner, hopefully that will suffice in the obtainment of a quality facsimile of the coin. Additionally, if the coin does not meet my expectations, it will be arriving back to its place of origin, the RCM.

I can just imagine the RCM dropping a couple of MS-65 into the stream, turning it into a lottery.

Hi, I'm new here so please be gentle. I'm a novice collector, and I noticed the RCM did not include the 1948 dollar. Is it possible to get a 1948 dollar "in any condition" below $1000? My searches at various coin shops have been unsuccessful :(

Possible? yes. Likely? no. If it was damaged or very low grade, maybe. Or you could hope to find an uninformed seller. Recent completed ebay listing show selling prices between $1275 and $2000 and...
