A friend had ordered this set, he received the first coin a few days ago, the '49, a letter stated that because of an overwhelming response , the '35 would ship later. Sorry , no pictures , it was encapsulated and all had was my crappy cell, but I did not notice any wear on the obverse ; ie brow , chin , hair on crown of head, but there were lots of hairline scratches in the fields on both sides , so would these lower the grade to AU ?
All in all not worth $60.

@aarf, thanks :P Please write how the coin looks when you receive it. I'm too curious to know how is the quality. Just saw the subscription today for the first time, and see it's on awaiting stock unfortunately. Thanks in advance :P

Well, west canuk, I could have told you that. I got a '35 from my dealer for $30, and it is a nice grade. The only reason he charged me more than bullion, which is typical, is because he had bought a collection of them off a guy, and had $25 or so each sunk into them.

Anyway, not to sound snoody, but I could tell that any serious collector would avoid this set like the plague. Hell, I will sell you a collection of the same dollars for a 20% markup, which would end up being roughly $30 a Dollar (Not an offer...just an example).

The Mint is about selling to people who buy low volume, don't know better, or don't care about value. There's nothing wrong with that, I have bought 2 War of 1812 Dollars, the 1/2 Ounce Dragon, the 1/2 Ounce Penny, and every $20 for $20 coin except the first. The difference is that these coins were not available elsewhere easily for half the asking price.

The Mint *should not* be in the business of reselling numismatic issues IMHO. If they must, then I would expect them to trim their margins considerably to compete with private dealers, who can trounce this offering easily while still making profit.

I emailed the mint asking where they were getting the coins. I was told that they are buying them from dealers.
Rest in Peace

I prefer the outcome of selling them onto other collectors rather than the melting pot. However, if they were melted, that in itself would increase the value of collections held privately.

Based on the information I read about the mint vintage silver dollars being over priced I cancelled my order. Has anyone received their orders? If so, are they happy with them?

Rookie

P.S. Thanks for the welcome Rockdaddy.

it's great for those without local coin dealers. I do find the markup high, as mentioned.

One dealer has a ton of silver dollars on sale this week. If you were to get graded MS-64 for the 6 dollars in this set, it would cost you $10 less than via the mint...but you wouldn't get a collector box.

I guess the question is, will the mint set be at least graded MS-64 for all six coins? Don't think that they will. I don't even think the mint is suggesting any particular grade never mind haven't the coins graded.
