So XXI...20 parts copper and 1 part silver. Got it! Thanks Valiant I had no idea what it meant. Strange because I have several coins with that mark in the exergue.

Eng5858! That is extremely kind and generous of you. I feel obligated to give something to you in return. Are you looking for anything in particular? Shoot me a PM!

Yeah Doucet is right this last one you posted is actually from Arles! I personally very rarely see any from Arles to begin with, and I have never seen one with a Chi-Rho. Very awesome thanks for posting that. Doucet also points out that cool little mystery about the flan sizes. It's quite facinating to talk about an realize the differences between the two officinae. Good post

Incredible thread!

Does that XXI or XI hold true for all coins with a mint mark in ex.?

I have a Gallienus Antoninianus 18.6mm, 3.20 grams, gazelle walking right, that has the XI in ex., is that then 10 parts copper to 1 part silver? Or does it mean something else. Thanks!

No. Gallienus XI is a shop number. The XXI 20:1 started with Aurelian when he reformed the currency and made a point that the coins be the full 4.7% silver while earlier coins had dropped below that. The last XXI are a few post reform coins (larger folles) of the 1st Tetrarchy. XI of this series is very rare and limited to a very few coins made with double the silver. Tacitus is the most common. XXI was used by most mints but a couple translated it into Greek KA. There is more on my XXI page:
http://www.forumancientcoins.com/do...ac73xxi.html

One of the best 'proofs' of Antioch might be the use of the shop system as used there when the city name was on the coins. I expect a lot of it was comparison of styles. Antioch and Constantinople (not founded yet) seemed to use more shops than anyone else so finding coins with 6-15 shop choices suggests looking at Antioch as a possibility.

Always be careful to distinguish between coins of Constantinople and the city Constantia which was better know before and after as Arles. Constantinople used shop numbers in Greek numerals following the city name while Arles or Constantia put a Latin ordinal (P,S) before the city name.

#4: I think it is time for a nice provincial coin. I may have posted this a while back, so I apologize if you have seen it before.

I don't know too much about Jovian or his reign. He is related to the family of Constantine, no?
