unholyroller Pillar of the Community United States 1903 Posts	Posted 06/09/2012 5:40 pm I recently bought a 1861 $1 gold coin mounted in a bezel mount pendant. It is not a "screw type" so if I was to try and get it out it would have to be cut out. Any suggestions on getting it out? Just resell it in the pendant? Report this Post to the Staff

Buddy Rest in Peace United States 7075 Posts	Posted 06/09/2012 5:54 pm If you decide to remove the coin, take it to a jeweller. He's got experience and the right tools. The last thing you want to do is to accidentally scratch it. I've got a couple of itty bitty gold coins in bezels and I am leaving them alone. Right now I have no reason to remove them and I don't think that it will improve their value because I'm sure there are marks or dents underneath. Report this Post to the Staff
Bryan1315 Bedrock of the Community United States 14454 Posts	Posted 06/09/2012 6:46 pm I agree, there are some types of bezels that are very tough to get off. The only ones I have ever tried to take off were either screw types or they had prongs on the bezel that holds the coin in but I had a Morgan that was given to me once that had a bezel that looked to be soldered together in one spot. I didn't try to remove that one but if you look closely you may see a place where the bezel meets together like this one I had. I still would probably take it somewhere to get it removed if it were me but if you want to try it you can look for this just in c ASE Report this Post to the Staff

I took it to a jeweler who wanted to charge me $20 bucks and gave me a disclaimer that he could not guarantee it wouldn't get damaged during the removal process. Report this Post to the Staff
Mechman Valued Member United States 275 Posts	Posted 06/09/2012 8:08 pm I just removed a Peace (bezel) and Morgan (prongs) from a belt buckle and a pendant. Both coins had damage from the mounting. They are now my feelers for when I want to touch silver. The numistic value is gone + they are common dates. I think you would be better off leaving the bezel on. Gyrene7483 Pillar of the Community United States 1704 Posts	Posted 06/09/2012 8:18 pm The damage has already been done which would affect its numismatic value so if you want to put the coin in an album to fill a hole you should probably take it to a jeweler to have it removed unless you feel confident enough to do it yourself.
