Quote: is that 1844 an overdate? thanks mackwork - When I was posting I noticed something with the 1st 4 but honestly I don't know how the overdate should look. I did find an image but the date looked different than mine. Any assistance would be appreciated. We're at the beach house in Maine for a couple of weeks and I don't have any of my coin reference 'stuff' with me. The thread commander will probably be very disappointed in me.

the only overdate in 1844 that involves that first 4 is N-5. Looks like yours fits the bill to me.

Nice ID robuddo! I found an N-5 on Heritage and zoomed in and cipster's 1844 does indeed fit the bill.

All nice ones today. Those 1844/81 types had me confused, so I did some searching and found this on the Heritage site:
"Although listed as 44 over 81, this variety technically shows 844 struck over an inverted 184 (the date was originally struck upside down and was then corrected)."

Sure does look like an 1807/6. Maybe the large 7 type? As long as Moe said it's OK to go backwards, here's one I got not long ago. My only "slobbed" large cent. The reverse brought down the grade, but I don't really care care about the grade - I liked the obverse. The cheek scratch is on the slab.
