many experts believe that pure silver is the way to go due to its ability to be easily recognized and for the purposes of industrial applications. Now, I'm a really poor college student, will tell you that I have 44 dollars in my checking account, and around $200 in junk 90% silver (most of them are Franklins that I found CHRing). would it be a good idea for me to sell all of them now? Please let me know, I really appreciate your help :)

Personal preference. I for one like 90% halves and ASE's better than rounds and bars.

You'd get less than spot for the Franklins, then have to pay ask for .999, then receive bid if you ever have to sell. Personally, I wouldn't incur those extra 2 rounds of transaction costs. However, since you're questioning things right now, it may be appropriate for you to cash in some of the Franklins to buy .999 and then enjoy both worlds.

.999 and ASE are the cream of the crop here in the USA.

If you are in need of cash you have no choice but to sell. If you plan on staying in silver, keep the Franklins and add bars on the next buy. There is no way I would sell Franklins now to put that same money in .999 of any shape. You will take a hit on the sell side of 90% and then pay the premium for the buy side of .999.

The ASE's and SML's are beautiful silver bullion coins. I own both and I love 'em. HOWEVER... When money's tight, don't hesitate to stick with 90% silver! IMHO, it's the single smartest and most cost effective way to slowly build a silver stack on a shoestring budget.

I agree with coinwatch and the 90% take. I've been loading up on junk silver for a few months now. I will turn it into .999 bullion at some point, but not until silver starts a good consistent upward climb. I wouldn't sell right now....not while the market is cooled off. Wait for the excitement to kick in, that's when you know its time. Cheers!

You'd be better off buying rather than selling. Wait until silver goes back up. You'd be selling near 52-week lows.

90%, 999 and 9999 are like blonds, brunets and redheads... I like them all!

I will certainly buy 90% but only if it is 90% or lower in relation to the spot number. Now obi if they are AU or better they get put aside into my collection. I have a few nice rolls I keep a nice BU roll of 62's and an awesome 1964 proof roll. I also put aside all 1964 kennedy's as he was my mom's favorite prez, wonder why lol.

I like ASEs / bars for stacking. I find that I don't like selling the 90%ers.

I much prefer 90%. I don't understand paying a premium on things like ASEs when you can get the 90% for a better price. And because I doubt very much I am alone in this line of thinking, I am dubious about being able to recoup the premium when I go to sell.

Regardless of the market if you don't have the BUDGET, you can't afford to pay premiums needed to convert 90% into 99.9%. If you are stacking, 90% stacks just as well as 99.9%. (Plus you get the 10% in copper for free!) Save the money spent on premiums and spend it on making the stack a little taller or improving your diet. (Too much top ramen noodles isn't good for poor college students! A good diet will keep you alive longer than 90% vs 99.9%.)
