Although I normally collect coins, I have a few bank notes, one of which is this, and I wonder if anyone could give me some information about it and how much it may be worth. The date is 1997.
Many thanks.

Issue 17th April 1997 with 6 signature varieties. Unless they are still redeemable through a Portugese bank (which seems very unlikely considering the current economic crisis)I would say very little given it's 'circulated' condition.

Thanks for the information.
I have been looking on the net and have now found 2 of them for sale at 14 euros and $16. So I might earn something on it after all.

Portuguese notes are very popular and continue to retain their value over the years since they switched over the the Euro. I have found only French notes have reduced in value over the past 5 years.

Are you talking about old issues (pre-1960) or modern ones?

The pre-1960s have gone down in price. There are plenty of them for sale at very reasonable prices and a lot less than catalog.

The Krause catalog prices are different from the local catalog (like the Charlton catalog in Canada). I don't remember the name but I saw one in Paris last year.

I priced up about 10 French and Spanish notes that were 50% than ebay. I am not a collector of French or pre-Euro notes otherwise would have bought a lot more. Really the only reason I bought then was because I could flip them on ebay for almost double and then spend the money to buy notes from countries that I collect (Canada, India, Singapore, Mauritius and Ceylon/Sri Lanka).

Could you please provide "sources" where pre-1960s French noted have been sold way lower than CV?

You mean "La Eote 2009-2010 catalog (Des Billets De La Banque De France Et Du Tresor)"?

Well, that depends on several factors wherein prices would be affected, such as:

- Condition (grading)

- Year of issue (i.e. Some French Provisional, Military & Specialized issues are not THAT in demand)

- Credibility & reliability of ebay sellers ...etc

I always monitor French Market Values for issues pre-1960s in ebay & some other reputed auction houses.

Majority of French notes (pre-1960s) I have found were realized high prices (with reference to the above mentioned factors)

Cheers
