I had a penny like that, it was in a pendant. I could not see the other side until I removed it from the pendant. Brass on one side, copper on the other side. The brass side looked just like this. Hoping for the best for you.

I just found a 2008 "brass" penny a few minutes ago. It also looks golden yellow like the one in the ebay ad posted above. The edge is copper coloured, there is a faint copper tone in the center of the leaf, as well as the head on the back. It does not appear to be heated, it is a STEEL penny, not zinc. It is difficult to photo (for me anyways), so I hope you can see the difference. In real life it is obvious, it stands out almost like a gold coin amongst a pile of copper. Is this anything special?

Had some time on my hands Friday evening.Got out a bunch of plated cents, both zinc and steel, and successfully turned them to a brassy colour like the ebay one I linked to in an earlier post and the one shown by Sixthcents.

1984 Canadian "Brass" cent: Mystery solved!
Since my original posting on July 17 which produced about 3 or 4 further "brass" pennies out there and a good cross section of comments,I came to the conclusion that I was indeed a victim of a hoax coin.
So,I took the ultimate and irreversible step of putting the coin in my vice and cutting it in half with a hacksaw. Yes, the inside of the coin was solid copper, or 98% to be exact.
It's obviously very easy to make phony brass pennies!
Thanks for everyone's input.

Can I have one of the half pieces? I would still like to test it under the XRF, to see just how thick that brass layer would have to be, before the X-rays no longer can penetrate it....

Would there be a way to tell it was converted after minting, as opposed to before?

I think it was plated (or colour was changed) after it left the mint. It's a very thin layer of "brass" which would be bound to wear off quite quickly once the coin was put into circulation. I can't imagine what purpose the mint would have in doing this to a coin.
SPP-Ottawa: Sure, tell me where to mail it and the remaining half of the coin is yours!

We cannot contact each other, until you have 50 posts. Just set it aside (for me), and after 50 posts, you will be able to send me a message via the forum.

I thought I would follow up on this post from a few months back. SPP kindly agreed to XRF my 1996 cent and, wonder of wonders, it comes back with a composition that is totally unlike a typical Canadian cent. Delving through records pointed to the answer. Canada minted a nickel brass 2 cents for Cyprus at the time with a size almost exactly the same as the cent. My 1996 now proudly sits in a CCCS holder. Not bad for a $5 ebay buy! Here it is, along with a shot of the Cyprus 2 cents.
