Hey, all. So my fiancee and I have been kind of sitting on this one for a bit, but we've decided we definitely want to go ahead and submit her Cheerios Dollar in for grading. I'm wondering what company would be best to submit to, though, with this particular pattern. I've got no particular leanings. I've never submitted a coin before and I don't own a single graded coin, so I've got no experience here. When my fiancee was twelve she pulled it out of the Cheerios box and stuck it in a box under her bed. She says she doesn't know why she didn't open it, but she's glad, because ten years after it went in the box I found it (I have a nose for coins) and knew it was something special. So now we've had it sitting with my coins for two years and are looking into seeing how good a condition it is actually in. Some photos, of course.    |

Did you check to see for sure if this one had the pattern reverse? Not all of them from the cheerios promotion did.
It looks to me like yours does have the pattern though, from the obverse die marker there below the mintmark. Clearer pictures would be needed to tell for sure.
As to a grading service, I'd go with PGCS. You will more than likely get the best return with this company if you decide to sell. Plus, many of their service gaurentees are the best in the business. But, I kind of prefer the look of NGC slabs. NGC is not a bad company to submit to either. For a coin of this value I don't think I would send to ANACS, but that is my opion as well.
Also, if you do decide to go with NGC or PCGS you will have to look into how you are going to submit it. You could submit it yourself but you will have to pay a fee just to have these privileges, or send it in through a certified dealer.

I 2nd pcgs. Pcgs ngc and anacs are the most used but pcgs has the highest premiums then ngc then anacs. Pcgs/ngc are easier to sell to causual collectors on ebay and such too. I like the clear look of pcgs better than the white ngc slab personally but everyone has their own tastes. I wouldn't consider any other companies than those at this point in time though. Not sure if you have anything else you wanted to send in but if you do do it all at once. You'll save a bit on shipping and extra handling fees for multiple orders that way |

Errorcoins222 is correct that not all Cheerios Dollars are of the Pattern of 1999 Reverse... PCGS and NGC have confirmed that they have found the regular tail feather reverse in a few of their submissions (and not worth a premium)... There is some type of die marker south/west of the date that is on all the Pattern Dollars (I just don't remember what the marker was), and would recommend that the coin be removed from the package and the tail feathers checked out... One explanation for the regular tail feather reverse was that not all the 5,500 (I believe that is the amount) received by General Mills for their promotion was not of the quality required, and returned to the Mint for replacement pieces... Not knowing the difference between the 1999 pattern minted in 1999 for the promotion and the regular circulation pieces struck in late 1999 for the Walmart 2000 promotion at the time, the pieces returned from General Mills were replaced with the later regular pieces minted in late 1999... http://www.pcgs.com/Articles/Detail/5353ErrorCoins222, sorry I just glanced at your reply and didn't realize you mentioned the Die Polish marker on the obverse prior to posting my reply... I know about the nonpattern reverse Cheerios coins, but I think I'll leave it in the original packaging for now. I do not want to risk accidentally damaging the coin in any way, and we won't be able to actually make a submission until after we get married in October.
I think when we do though we will go through PCGS. I'll probably come back when we do asking for help filling out the sheet so everything comes out right.

Yeah, looking at it now, I'm pretty sure that yours is the pattern. And even if it wasn't, you could still get a good, but definantly not as great, amount of money for the regular cheerios dollars. Even the normal dollars, cracked out and put into a slab with no cheerios packaging can bring very large premiums.

Definitely do NOT remove it from the packaging. Even if it turns out not to be a pattern reverse it can still be slabbed as a Cheerios dollar. If you take it out and it isn't the pattern reverse then you just have a coin worth one dollar.
And when you send it in be sure to mark very clearly on the invoice to check for the pattern reverse. You would think they would automatically check since it is a Cheerios dollar but I wouldn't take any chances. If you don't specifically tell them to mark it Cheerios and look for the pattern reverse you may get it back as just an ordinary Sac dollar.

PCGS would be my choice to send a coin of this value to. Its really amazing to see them still in the package, the only bad part is you can't see the Reverse but DO Not Take it out to look at the Reverse let PCGS do it that way even if it doesn't it will still be a Cheerios Dollar

SaintRidley, what happened? Do you have any pictures of the slabbed coin? If things didn't work out between you and your lady, did you at least get to keep the Cheerios dollar?

If it dosent NEED to be cracked for diagnostics I wonder if you can get it (and the penny) graded as is with the backboard or at least in the soft pack like gsa's?... I would want it specially or "soft slabbed" as such if possible for sure!

No updates, yet, as the coin is still hanging out in its original packaging. I posted this shortly before starting grad school (hello low wages), and my wife started and finished her master's degree just this month (her internship this summer is all that's left, so hello even more low wages. As a result, we've put plans to submit the coin on the back burner because of affordability. We also found, upon moving here, that we have supremely lackluster postal service in this area and are less than inclined to send something like this through it. So we're probably going to hold onto this advice until we move (with luck I'll land a tenure-track position when I'm on the job market) and submit after that time.
