Bought this cute canvas bag, It would have had 16,000 threepences inside from San Francisco Mint. If you look at the mintage of 1944s threepences there would have only been 2 bags in total sent to Australia.

I just read the number in the book, forgot to add the 000's So there would be 2,000 bags made. This is the first one I have ever seen, and I don't think all that were made would have survived. I think it's cool. :)

How many of those bags would have survived?
Would be of interest to both U.S. and Australian collectors of exonumia.
Perhaps may bring more at a U.S. auction.
If you want sell it, I would first give it a go here within the CCF.

Do you mind my asking how much you paid? I'm sure it would bring a pretty penny if you were going to sell it, atleast as far as canvas bags go. It's very strange and I'm sure the survival rate is minimal. This is a great pickup, regardless of price imo. I give it an A++ in cool-factor.

YAY for the Olympics when people are not on the bay I get cool buys. If you find the link you can tell by the bids I really wanted it he he.
Now does anyone know the history of these things, did they get flown over or by sea. And were the coins loose in the bag or were they in rolls or baggies.
Where do you even start to learn about us bank bags.

Google or maybe some of the US forum members might have an idea. Good luck AC.

You got a bargain imo. Good for you! I'm pretty sure they would have been shipped loose within the bag as those directly from the mint always are.

I just tried google & nothing with 4 different searches. Maybe contacting the san fransisco mint could be worth a try.
