I was sorting coins last night and found an interesting Wisconsin quarter. The obverse has a normal, bright finish but the reverse has a satin finish. I stared at this coin for a long time because I thought I was seeing things. I compared the reverse to other satin finish coins and it looks just like it. Has anyone heard of this?
Its not unusual to find coins with newer obverse dies or the opposite newer reverse dies,, where the finish difference is noticeable ,, this is probably the cause of the two apparently different finishes, but seeing the detail of the two sides maybe helpful in being sure.
I'm going to try to get good pictures but I wanted to test the water first to see if this could even be possible. So you're saying it is the age of one die versus an erroneous die.
Most likely just die wear. Dies are not necessarily changed out in pairs. A worn die will appear to be more satiny while a new die will have a more prooflike appearance in comparison to the other.
