Probably the toughest year to find a business strike nickel dollar in MS-65. A true grade rarity. This one is PCGS MS-64, and I have one in a ICCS MS-65 flip that will be going to PCGS in the fall.

Nice dollar, SPP-Ottawa, why did the RCM have such a problem with strike quality on the nickel dollars?

SP silver: $BV
MS-67 nickel NBU: $35
MS-64 nickel BU: $15
MS-65 nickel BU: $350 (perhaps "undervalued" is what I am reading)

Logical? It's a lottery of hoppers, bags and rolls.

There is only 1 1972 MS-65 in the 2012 ICCS Population Report, and that is the coin I am sending to PCGS this fall (not the coin shown here). I suspect if a second one gets certified, that $350 is probably a realistic price, since there is very little demand (at least now) for high end business strike coins from the 1970s.

2,193,000 mintage

The big question:

Business strike or BU (in contrast to NBU/PL) finish collector coin?

Business strike implies general transactional usage, wear, and ultimately removal of large numbers from circulation, leaving only a small percentage of the mintage in original mint condition.

BU finish collector coin means the vast majority should remain uncirculated. The lack of MS-65 from the mass production lines becomes a mystery at why the RCM was so crappy at making them at that time. Just going through the motions? Today MS-67 is fairly common for many business strikes.

Can anyone answer my question as to what details you look at to classify a coin a weak strike? Thanks.

The short answer: the highest points on the coin (i.e., the deepest part of the devices on the dies).

Compare my photos in this thread from 1970 and 1971, to the photos of the 1973 coin also in this thread. Look at the details of the effigy, especially at the highest points.

Here's a toned 1973 silver dollar. I've heard the foam in the clamshell case is not archival. Some interesting color appeared after being stored for many years. I picked this one up a couple years ago at a show for slightly above the price of bullion. I think the color is neat.

Very nicely toned though I'm not sure that the packaging is the cause. Mine is in original packaging and slightly toned but nowhere near like your coin.

I forgot to post this one yesterday. I was with a friend when he purchased this error, and he let me photograph the coin. He has graciously let me post a photo here in this thread. This is a 1972 Specimen silver dollar, by the way, with a nice clip.

Would 50% silver dollars tone in that way exposed to only air?

Toning can be artificially induced. There's lots of info about faked toned Morgan dollars.

As my pic showed, there was this felt covered red plastic insert that held the plastic holder. Chemicals leaching from that or the clamshell (e.g. the glue that held the satin to the metal), may be the culprit.

1973 PCGS Business Strike MS-66 nickel dollar. This coin is fully struck, and is dripping with lustre and eye-appeal, and I constantly wonder why it did not grade MS-67. I also have another one, ICCS MS-67, that might make the trip to PCGS in the fall.

1973 nickel dollar business strike, with the die crack linking all the reverse beads together. This coin I put in a CCCS hard holder, MS-64. The premium value on these coins only applies if the die crack goes completely around the coin.
