I just received a cheap USB camera I got off the bay. It only cost £12 so I thought I would take a chance.

It is the "how cool is this?" product...I thought it didn't have any lights but it has 4 overpowered LED lights set into it.

I set it up and when I press the snapshot button on the device nothing happens, and when I press capture on the software which came with it it says "Cannot connect to device"

The method I therefore used was to leave it streaming and use snipping tool to capture the image from the video.

Here are my first couple of shots... it is of a silver shilling I received out of a vending machine as change in the late 1980's or early 1990's. The camera cannot photograph the whole coin in a focused manner from straight above so it needed a little angle to get the whole coin in frame.

For a smaller coin it seems you can get a better shot

I havent really had time to play around with it too much, its possible I can do better with a little practice since these are my first three shots. I would really like to cure that problem of why it won't connect when I press capture.

So all in all it is not entirely ideal but for £12 I think it is still good value.

Tell us the brand and model and maybe someone can give you a few pointers on that camera.

How does it do on tight up close shots. They aren't really made for taking pics of the whole coin so you may get better results with up close shots.

I just got one too and I love it. It was a little tricky installing but I also had the same problem "can't find device" . I explained the steps on my thread here; https://goccf.com/t/129143

Sounds like it didn't install correctly.

Thanks for the advice :) Re-installing the driver from the disk helped.

This is about as large as it goes before going really out of focus...

But it is quite good for close shots like this...

For £12 it is value...I get a better result using my scanner if I want to take full coin pictures but if I just want a detail it is a fairly convenient method to get an OK shot.

I am using a 1938 Great Britain large Penny in my demonstration. To show how a large coin can be photographed, simply prop the scope on a book or several books to acheive the distance required to fit the desired coin in the shot. The first photo is of the coin under 20x magnification and the scope at about 7 inches above the coin. The second photo is with the scope placed directly on top and against the coin using 20x magnification. The third photo is with the scope on top and against under maximum magnification on my scope it is 200x.

You must have a different camera or I am doing something wrong....

Using that technique as I explained before the camera cannot focus too far out.

New-USB-Camera,-Good-And-Bad

That is a 50 pence and you can see how blurry it is at distance.

Yes mine is a Digimicro brand, but it is only a $26 camera, so I thought it would be similar to yours. I suspect there is something wrong. Have you checked the focus knob to make sure it isn't stuck? Also on mine the magnification is adjusted through the software not on the camera, check to see its not on maximum magnification. Check the preview size In the options/preferences settings. Can you switch to a lower preview size Like 640x480. If you go too large like 1280x1024 you lose some adjustment capability.

That is on 640x480...

It came with software called photo impression 5. I see no computer setting for magnification, just a scroll wheel on the camera which seems to work fine and moves the outside lens to allow focusing.
