I am of the opinion that now is a good time to buy harder to get coins as the market as a whole has been suppressed by the down economy.

My question is what kind of impact has the economy had on commem prices, more specifically the classic commems, over the last few years. I know that more goes into the price than just the economy but my feeling is that in 06 07 when the economy was doing a lot better that many of these coins were probably fetching higher prices than they are now.

Interested to see if anyone can remember back to what the market was like back then and what changes theyve seen in terms of price and availability for the graded classic commems

From what I have seen TPG coins are going a bit higher than a while back. Raw coins on the other hand seem to be selling about right.

My experiences over the past few years at shows while talking to dealers I've known for years is that while the truly choice pieces are holding their own in terms of value, the average pieces have retreated some over the past few years from previous levels. The market is showing some signs of "life" but it is a good time to be looking for pieces you need for your collection. US classic commememoratives haven't been the "hot" item for a number of years.

Unfortunately, the lower prices have meant that some dealers (those with steady income in other areas) have been holding back their choicest pieces and are waiting for the next upturn in the market. I know several dealers that have been holding inventory (i.e., not making it available for sale) for several years at this point.

There are nice pieces out there, however, so focus on quality and negotiate prices as best as you can!

I haven't been collecting commems for very long but it does seem consistent with the other posters. Prices for average pieces are selling at wholesale to under wholesale. When available solid pieces can be had for reasonable prices under guide. I've picked up quite a few over the past year, buy the real rare and choice pieces remain pretty solid in price.

I had a feeling this was starting to happen. Didnt realize it had been going on for so long but even from 6-9 months ago ebay is kind of drying up on the higher end classic commems especially the blast white ones. I cant even remember the last time I saw a decent Antietam or Gettysburg in a 67.

Ive been fortunate enough to add a few in the last few months as well some at a great price, but I definitely agree that some of them its impossible to find a deal on and they seem to be holding their value quite well at least by comparison
