There's no law preventing them being used internationally, though, as they're not technically 'legal currency' or legal tender. There's a nice pic of a Hawick (near me) pound at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/8576780.stm I understand a lot of Hawick pounds went to expatriates around the world - I've not yet managed to get one ! Anaximander Pillar of the Community United Kingdom 709 Posts	Posted 09/27/2012 10:03 am The town of Lewes ( East Sussex, England ) has had a scheme like this running for some time. It appears the impact on the local community is much less than they hoped. ( i.e. practically negligible!) There is talk of a re-launch later this year. The issuer of the notes is supposed to hold England banknotes to the same value as the Lewes ones issued, to ensure that there is not a rush of paper money. The notes themselves are fine.
