Gold Coloured 1858 Penny - Coin Community Forum

Sheencrofter Valued Member Ireland 201 Posts	Posted 09/20/2012 06:59 am I have recently purchased this gold coloured Victoria penny dated 1858 in a job lot.It measures 34 mm and weighs 18.9 grams. I wonder if anyone could give me any info about it. I imagine it has a gold or gold coloured wash. Sorry about the photograph. I am hoping for a better camera in due course. Coin Chick Pillar of the Community Canada 1354 Posts	Posted 09/20/2012 12:37 pm I have a couple Canadian pennies and a US Indian Head penny that are completely gold colored. My thought was that it was either heat treated or went through a chemical change based on how they were stored. They look neat. I wish they were gold.lol Report this Post to the Staff

I suspect gold unless its a modern fake brass piece ... one or the other ... collectors do collect gilt pieces ... since SEI says its the right weight we can probably exclude brass/bronze ... seems its gilt (gold) wash over the original host coin of copper ...
