So what's the difference between this and privy maples that are sold to one company.

Thanks John. Again, not doubting what you say but you seem to have a really informed source. Are you able to say where this information is coming from?

I'm surprised that a small but apparently vocal minority has been able to get the RCM to change it's distribution on this coin.

Also very surprised that the Mint and coin dealers would be engaging in deals that appear to contravene the spirit of the NAFTA and the Competition Act.

in my opion the privy mark maples should not be produced by the RCM, it cheapens the image of canadian coinage our coins image should not be sold to highest bidder. the RCM will be a franklin mint, this coin is a legal tender and a one off coin for one private company thus the amazing monopoly pricing, all bullion coins around the world are sold at 2 to 3 dollar markups. if all bullion dealers can survive on 2 to 3 dollars markups why did lear chrage 68.00, because they can with the RCM help

cc ottawa, at the moment I prefer not to say for some obvious reason. canada post is the RCM largest dealer, but the next three gate west, jm, and canadian coin and currency carries a lot of pull at the RCM and it also help with the CNN and the individual voices of each collectors.

If anyone can, please let us know the thrust of the article. If it's just about the coin existing, then it's not very interesting to me. But if it's a story about the issues we've been discussing (high premium, exclusive minting etc) then that might be worth the read

I'll read it when I get home, and let you know what it's about. I saw it when I got home last night, but didn't get a chance to read it.

Does anyone know what capsule would fit the 1 1/2 oz polar bear coin?

The article discusses that the coin is now available in Canada, despite the exclusive minting. There is a quote from an RCM official stating something along the lines of the coin being made available for sale in Canda to make Canadian collectors happy. There is no talk of collectors being upset, or anything about prices or high premiums. Apparently the reason for the Polar Bear was to raise awareness and promote Canadian Bullion/Coins to another market. Not a long or in depth article by any means, but worth the read.

Just picked up one of these from my LCS for $66. Not the best price, but there's no shipping charges for picking one up! I like it, it's surprisingly heavy and thick! Like bekiz says above, what kind of capsule would work for such a thick coin? I've got some 38mm capsules at home I'll try, but I'm 98% sure they won't work. Guess I'll have to store it in the little plastic baggie it came in...

Got one today.

Nice coin. Thick and heavy. Finding a capsule will be tough.

I spoke with one of the APMEX phone reps yesterday. She said when they get the 2013 1.5oz silver Polar Bear in stock (date is still uncertain), they'll be selling it for $99.99 (USD) per coin and that the price won't fluctuate with spot, but will remain fixed @ $99.99 (USD) per coin. I asked her to repeat what she said so I could be sure I got it right. She did so and the info above is what she gave me.

You can get them on ebay for around $80, or around $65 from local shops and online outfits. I sure wouldn't pay $100 for it.

hulk - Thanks for the encouraging word. I found a couple of them on ebay in the $80 ballpark (like you said), but that's still pretty tough. Lear Capital offers it for $67, but their minimum shipping charge seems to be $25, so no help there either... Do you know where else in the US - online or otherwise - where I could get it for a less unpalatable price?
