Ummm, I'm merely needing a few opinions ... thanks, gang Yup, it's Friday night and I've got a wine beside me ... what could go wrong, right? ... right, wrong? Ummm, during the past couple of weeks I've been crusin' for coins and I always seem to keep this good ol' dog-coin on my wish-list ... sure, it never seems to make it to the top of my list, but it never gets booted-off of my list either ... I love this coin ... yah, I know that you can't read quite a bit of the legend, but the coin's style is so much nicer than many of the other "designers'" styles ... ==> is this dog-coin a dog, or a winner?Roman Republic AR Denarius of C. Postumus Date: circa 74 BC Size: 18.7 mm Weight: 3.96 grams Obverse: Draped bust of Diana right, with bow and quiver over shoulder Reverse: Dog running right, spear below, C. POSTVMI in exergue Attribution: Cr. 394/1a; RSC Postumia 9 Description: A nice denarius with clear detail Edited by stevex6 10/05/2012 7:03 pm

Well, as I am totally unfamiliar with ancient coins my opinion is only about aesthetics: I LOVE the running dog!

Nice dog; poor legends. Overall a decent coin. For comparison, mine has better legends and hair detail on the head but mine has a chippy edge and a serious banker's mark on the cheek. With ancients it is not always all that easy to say this one is better than that one because we have to make value judgments on things like the relative worth of style versus wear versus strike verses surfaces. Maybe that is why I collect the things. Who ever heard US collectors get into an argument over whether the Denver mint has better style than San Francisco? To drive the matter into the ground: I bought a duplicate coin at the show last week purely out of error in checking my collection list and being forgetful as to what I owned. Now I have two coins. Should I get rid of one? Which one? Is this choice obvious to you? It is not to me.

This coin has enough remaining detail for me to like. The dog has a lot of grace and speed. If I have any reservations, I might want a complete legend. I know the price on this one, so I might try an offer first.

Okay fine ... I have Larry's buddy, "THE DOG COIN" on the priority list ... Now I'm gonna up the game by tossing-in another coin ... => does this next coin beat-out, LARRY? I personally "LOVE" this coin ... but keep in mind that this coin costs "3-Times" as much as LARRYSicily, Syracuse: Agathokles Æ24317-289 BC Diameter: 23.9mm Weight: 9.26gm Obverse: Diademed head of the young Herakles left, ΣΥΡ'ΚΟΣΙΩΝ before Reverse: The Nemean lion striding right, club above, ΣΩ in exergue. Calciati II, p290, 150, R1 7; c.f. SNG ANS 733ff. Other: gVF, superior portrait with sculpted features usually represented by simpler forms QUESTION => is this coin "3" times as good as LARRY?

There's some really nice detail on that AE. I knew it was from Syracuse before I read the captions--guess why?

Quote: does this next coin beat-out, LARRY? To me it doesn't, at least not at 3x the price. Dogs on ancients must be much rarer than lions? Cant remember seeing many.

Guess it's not too obvious, huh? The casting sprues are really obvious on that one--many coins from Syracuse have them. I like them because they show the process of making these coins.

Really? ... geeez, I guess I should know that extra-fact, eh? => apparently, my second option-coin is a "cast" coin ... hmmm, I'm not sure if that is a plus, or a minus? (I don't have a cast coin, yet ... well, that I know of)

I have a Syracusan bronze of Agathokles, but it ain't even anywhere even half as good as this one! A $20 job, if I'm lucky. Still, I am quite pleased to have it. It also exhibits the opposite diameter casting spurs.
