It appeared to be lower than the 4 available die position and the D doesn't appear right either.

Any 16-D Mercury dimes or any key dates like many had suggested need to be send to TPG to have it authenticated, show events or online alike, unless you're going to keep it in an album or holder. TPG graders will not give definite answer until coin is in hand for reviews. I have gone through those channels before knowing I have either a variety or error and solid pictures to proof it. Yes. It need to be submitted to be properly authenticated.

I do not doubt this one, but still signs of being cleaned, light scratches and as I mentioned before is missing the luster that it should have with this grade, perhaps going through auction maybe a better return, most large auction house will send it into PCGS to get it authenticated, thereby giving the assurance to both buyer and seller. Otherwise, you will find fewer risk taker. Good luck.

Even being cleaned and scratched, there's no good reason not to have a '16-D, particularly in that grade, in a top-tier TPG holder.

Agree to a price, on the condition that they send it to a TPG, and offer to pay the TPG fee. Stipulate that you'll buy the coin if it comes back as genuine, even if it gets a "details" grade (since you can tell from the pictures it's likely to get one). But be willing to pay the fee regardless, so that the seller has no excuse for not sending it in.

If they still refuse to send it in, then you know the seller is hiding something.

I will make him an offer, that's for sure. But I'm not too sure how much the cleaning lowers its value.
I'm thinking about offering him $1500 and see if I get him to think about it or if he punches me out..

what would you say would be a "good" low offer?

And regarding the seller not wanting to send it in for grading: He has a money back guarantee, so I will of course send it in, and it comes back as fake, I just return it for a refund.

Epikur, this coin looks genuine to me. But even though it appears to have been cleaned, you will not touch this for $1500. It is too nice to go that cheap. This even has split bands.

Coinhawkeye, I really have my doubts that this is genuine. The mint mark is way too low for any of the dies and the shape of the 'D' is not right.

I did get it, for just a bit under $1600.

this buy was a pure investment, so it will be going over to ha.com for grading and sale...

should be able to make a nice profit on it

$1600 seems too good to be true but I wish you luck that it turns out great for you.

That is VG/F money, which this coin clearly is better than. I think this poor thing was subjected to a LOT of dipping to strip the luster like that. Its a FSB, AU details...I would not have sold that for less than twice what you are talking about.

You either got really lucky or its a really good fake. Or there is something about that coin I am completely missing. Cant wait to see how it comes back.

got the coin today...

the reverse has quite a bit of luster left, Not too many hairline scratches at all actually.
the obv, on the other hand...ouch!

Oh well, it's off to HA tomorrow, and they thought that there's enough time to get it onto the FUN show in Orlando.

Looked up my invoice on NCG, it got AU details, scratches. Not scratched

Which is less bad; scratches or scratched?
and I can't believe it didn't get the full band designation...

Would they even feel obligated to comment on the bands if they were giving it a details grade?
