I recently bought a lot of Buffalo nickels where there are two restored nickels, 1914s and 1918d. These are better date nickels. How much would the restored dates detract from their value? Numismedia and RedBook say that 1914s is worth $23-26 in good condition and the 1918d is worth $18-$22. What percentage would you retract from the value for being restored?

The 'advanced search' function on ebay can be useful for this type of information.

Here's the search for completed listings for 1914-S Buffalo nickel restored date: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...md=1&_ipg=50

For better dates, they typically fetch 10-20% of problem-free G4 examples. For more common dates, they're worth less than unmolested dateless nickels.

I was thinking they would fetch about 25% percent but looks like you might be right, closer to 10%-%20. They seem more like filler type coins. The lot only has two restored coins out of 20 and they are both better dates.

Restored dates generally sell for more than dateless ones, and the rare dates/mint marks can still get a good premium, although never as much as one with a visible date.

10-15% seems about right. I bought a 1918/17 D on ebay for a little over $100 in order to fill the Dansco hole. Numismedia.com lists it as $1,050 in G4. Not sure I'll be able to fill the 1937 3-legged hole as easily. :-(

Certainly NOT with a restored 1937-D 3 legger. I'd be willing to bet such a thing does not exist.
