Before you all scream fake and what not... what is your initial feeling about this coin? Why would it be fake? It is traceable back to one of the larger numismatic familiy collection in europe, with ancestry back to the 1700s. the dealer who sells it is well renowned...requested more pictures and will post them as they are sent to me. here goes...

Nothing detracts me that says this is a fake, except the luster don't appears to be there, and it may have been dipped and cleaned with some scratches.
The D looks like either a Die 1 or Die 4 position, but need better photos near the MM.

The D looks correct but yes, it should have traces of luster in this grade.

This coin has been cleaned. If graded by a TPG, should come back as cleaned and tooled. The black tarnish still remaining in the hard to reach areas, is the reason. I suppose, under the right conditions, the coin might tone some, but, it will always be a high dollar, key date Mercury that somebody messed with. On a side note, I don't really care who owns it, who is selling it, or who held it.....the coin must be able to stand on it's own merit.

I agree cleaned and tooled.
It's either authentic or a better than average fake. The mint-mark looks like the right style to me, but some 1917 dimes use the same mint-mark style as 1916, so it could be a sandwich of a 1916-P/S obverse with a 1917-D reverse.

Yes, this coin MUST be certified. Send it to PCGS.

I don't see any red flags but the coin may be cleaned and/or scratched.

If the MM is adhered on to the dime, its one of the best I have seen yet, so close up of the MM location and side way shot would be good way to tell. But either way, I think this will come back as detail grade in any TPG.

Looks like the real deal to me, just had a cleaning in the past. If you trust the dealer, and the price is right go fo it. If I had the chance I would add this one to my Mecrury dime album in a flash.

The surface looks to have been bead blasted as the scratches would have been a different tone. It is in real nice condition hope it is real.

Epikur, not to try to steal your thread, but I figured while the Mercury dime experts were looking at your dime they could give their thoughts on mine too.

CoinHawkeye,
The MM location and the MM itself doesn't appear to match any of the 4 die.

macmercury, looks like the lower D die, no?
Appears the top of the 'D' is in between the gap in the 'E' in "ONE" Aligned with the 'E' Closer to the leaf than the stem.
Maybe I'm wrong, but from what I can tell, it looks good to me.

CoinHawkeye, have you tried sending your dime in to be graded to confirm authenticity?
