Previously, the best price I found on platinum coins (as opposed to bars) from a major dealer was the Australian Platypus at Goldmart for "only" $74.99 per ounce over spot (in fact, I bought one last year when platinum dipped briefly to $1500).

I just noticed, however, that Goldmart now has the 1 ounce Swiss Platinum Thaler for $49.99 over spot. Does anybody know anything about these? Are they recognizable? Collectible? Any idea why the premiums are so much cheaper than other coins?

Recognizable for sure. The Swiss Thaler silver coins has a long history in Europe. I'm not sure what the history behind their platinum bullion is but my guess is that it should acquire more collectible value as time goes on. I wouldn't say $50 is all that different from $80 either as far as premiums go. It could just be that Europe is a shorter hull than Australia for importing coins.

Thanks for the info! I've seen platinum bullion coins with premiums upwards of $150 dollars per ounce for no reason that I can figure out, so $50 seems like a real bargain as long as the coin is trusted.
