Most collectors of ancient Roman coinage and Byzantine coinage group both era's into the term ancients. I think simply because after the Western Roman Empire fell in 476 AD there was still the Eastern Roman empire which was very much alive in Constantinople. In reality the ancient era (Classical era) ended at the fall of the Western Empire. The Medieval era (middle era, or Dark Ages) begain at that point, from the late 5th century to the 15 Century.

My two coins are from the Byzantine era.

I dont have any of these "cup shaped" coins, I would love to see a side view, to get an idea of dimension. Its amazing that such an unorthadox shape has come down to is in such good condition. It will be tough to be that piece. Kudos echizento.

I was lucky several years back to acquire almost 200 of this type for $7.00 each. I've since sold 3/4 of them and made some money, but now I regret that I did. This type is my favorite in the Byzantine series of coins.

Basilius I and Constantine VII(867-886)follis

These two coins must be considered medieval but as we can read on the reverse legenda of second coins they still considered themselves roman even in nearly 900 in fact we read basieleis romaion "roman's emperors".

That is an exceptionally nice reverse on the Constans II. The monogram is not always that clear.

WOW Eng. Thanks. That are a really interestingly shaped coins. I wonder was this a consequence of their manufacturing process or where they meant to be cup shaped for stacking. Kudos on the cup shaped coins.

Giano- Great reverse on coin # 2 "King of the Romans"
