They were struck on round shape dies. No one really know why they were struck that way but it make the series unique.

Thanks for comments,I've beeen out some months for work. However I put the first coin for the monogram in fact sometimes is not clearly visible on these coins. And the seconond coin is interesting for the reverse that demonstrate for sure how they still considered themselves roman. I always thought that these coins are beautiful as the oldest Roman but I understand that they can't please everyone even because the level of mintage is usually very low, but, as mentioned, these coins should be viewed with eyes and mind totally different from the concept of beauty greek and roman.

oh and by the way, chrsmat71 => you're 100% correct => I wanna buy some of these 500-1200 AD coins! ... but unfortunately (or fortunately), I already have two coins simmering in the background, so I have to wait until I know if they're in play or not ... => but again, "yes", I am now very intrigued by these fringe-dated coins ... yummy, yummy!

that's a fantastic reverse on that coin giano..amazing. I didn't know until recently that "byzantine" was a relativly modern term. and the fall of the west blurs a bit more when you look at maps like this where they still have several fingers in the old western cookie jar. yeah stevex, I've been shopping to! it will probably have to wait for me.

Interesting Chris....but at the end of the day we can tell how well the Romans fumbled that cookie jar, tipping it over and causing it to break into a thousand little kingdoms....ugh pieces....Turning law in order into a thing of the past and rule was governed not by lineage or by tradition but by the guy with the fastest horse and the biggest sword and sharpest arrow... c. 1000AD

whoa...look at that monster! that is a very cool coin TJC. hmmmm...i see what you mean, and I think I see some similar thing going on with the obverse letters. I don't know if that is a double strike or not..i would guess no but we need an expert opinion.
