im sorry if this is in the wrong place but I'm new to forums also. I was wondering if you guys and gals can give me an idea of the grade of a coin I found today. any other info on it would be great also. thanks   |

 That's a nice Barber half dollar. It's somewhere in the VG range but I'm not a Barber expert. You've come to the right place as this forum has many experienced collectors who can answer your questions. Definitely a VG8 if not 10. Nice coin and as GRR said, 150.00 or a bit more. Where did you find this coin? That is a heck of a find. |

Looks to be around a VG grade. Take a closer look below the tail feathers. Looks like some tooling has been done (scratches). More than likely it is an altered 1914-S.

I have to agree with LogPotato it looks like there was a mintmark that was removed.

Not just 'removed' but crudely scraped away with the aid of something like a penknife. Here is a pic with the contrast boosted, that clearly shows the gouge marks:  So what could have been the purpose of that? It's too rough an alteration to fool anyone. |

Well, it fooled me. But, my eyes were drawn to the area and I suspected cleaning.
I stand corrected, for now.
While I would has passed on it if it were for sale, to get one from a paper boy in change
is nothing to sneeze at!
Bullion value at the worst.

The mintmark has been crudely removed to make it appear to be the semi-key 1914(P), a much more valuable coin that was struck without a mintmark. As it is with that damage, it would be worth silver spot value which is currently ~$12.
