Another in my continuing saga " Out with the Old & In with the New". Today's episode: Seated Liberty dollar - No Motto; Some of you may remember this dollar, my mother referred to as if she was wearing a "helmet" or "witches hat", while it may not appear to be that obvious in the image, it was (trying to be nice, since it is still available from the seller)...not to my liking. (out with the old) (in with the new) Edited by oih82w8 11/09/2012 08:49 am

I like the old one much better.
The new one has been dipped and stripped and very unattractive and unoriginal. The first one is actually very difficult to find looking that original. I'm still looking for a With Motto with that originality in XF+.
Sorry, to be so blunt.
I must admit though that your other purchases seem to largely fall in the arena I call "superb".

The original looked like mine... I got it for a song (in a very good trade!) 1876 CC dime Is the Witch Hat common? Also... I preferred the Original too... The new one looks dipped

I've mentioned that the original looks better overall.

Prethen, I appreciate your honest opinion. I liked the color of the the first, but in hand the "helmet" was unbearable, so it was sent back. I will have to see if I still have the image at the house. Question: If it was dipped/stripped why would it not be considered "cleaned" and given a details grade (genuine-not gradable)?

I think that it should have a details (cleaned) grade.
But some coins aren't given details grades when they should...

To the OP, sometimes, they will give a cleaned coin a grade as it may be "market acceptable".

WindChild, Your 1876-CC dime was struck with a rusted die. Many CC specialists look for this variety. Beautiful coin. I also prefer the VF30 NGC Dollar.

I overlooked the "hat" but, I think if I had to choose, it still would be the first. Seated dollars have largely dipped and stripped. The ones you see with toning many times are retoned and all originality is really gone. The services I guess recognize that if they only took circulated Seated dollars that have never been dipped, they wouldn't be grading too many, hence the "market acceptable" syndrome. I think you'll have an easier time finding an original No Motto than With Motto.

I am rather torn on this one. I can see both sides of the coin. (Yes, I went there). While I prefer the colour of the old one, I think the "helmet" would bother me the most. I think you did good.

jbuck, pun intended... lol.
I also prefer the new coin. Though I much prefer the patina of the first, that helmet would drive me crazy also. Second coin may be dipped, may not be, but either way its beautiful and will look great in your collection!

The new one is wicked nice! Is there a reason you picked that particular year & mine both times?

So you still have the old one or has it been sold already?
