My friends late grandfather had a Wheat cent collection that was ruined from some kind of folder, whitman maybe? The got a weird rust-like... rustiness. Not sure how to explain it. Maybe it was moisture? I have old jeffersons in a whitman, but I keep that in a ziplock freezer bag. Basically is there a safe folder that I could do the same with? Thanks for any help!

Most people would recommend albums instead of folders, but it depends on your wants. The best folders or albums are dependent on how they are stored. I think kept in a moisture free, and temperature controlled environment would be best. I have my coin albums in a safe with desiccant packs to try and limit the amount of moisture.

I have a Dansco for my Mercury dime collection, but have other 2x2 in non-PVC sleeves in home made albums, and can be arrange anyway I like. The climate don't change too fast in my safe place, so no other preventive care for now.

I've explained this several times in the past. NO Folders are really safe for coins. Here are some of the reasons. 1. The front is exposed to your breath, fingers, coughing, sneezing, etc. 2. The rears are not even visable 3. Due to the process of the slots being made to hold in the coins, they are rather tapered. This means you have to push the coins into the slots with your fingers or thumbs. One person I know uses a rubber hammer for that. 4. The process to make a Folder is to splash glue on a piece of paper and lay the slotted cardboard on that. This means the glue is now in the back of those slots. When dampened at all, the glue gets rather reactivated and gets on the coins. This is why so many coins from Folders have streaks and lumpy stuff on the reverses. 5. Worn coins have a tendancy to fall out. Kids usually know that wetting that glue on the reverse of the slots will make the coins stay in better.
Of course there is the price factor. Folders are rather cheap. Albums are rather expensive.

Can someone post some pics of coins in albums? and give a price range? I'm not sure I know quite what albums you guys are talking about. I researched a lot to know what coins to look for, but now I'm trying to figure out how to display them and go from accumulation-->collection, and I REALLY don't know much.

I only have a picture of the front online right now, but the coin reverse can be see just like the front. The protective slides were removed for the picture. A page of my Peace dollar Album.

So how much does something like that cost? I mean, for something like Jeffersons, it seems like if it's too expensive it could be worth more than the collection, if it's incomplete like mine... I don't have any pricey wheats either. However, it looks nice because you get both sides of the coins... plus the protective covers sound nice

Wizrad coins sells some green albums for much less than Dansco album prices. I got several different ones for only 5.00 each. I own some Danscos and really do not see much difference outside of the color; the Danscos can have pages added while these green ones cannot (no big deal to me); my green folders have thumb tabs making it easier to remove the plastic covers - while Dansco albums do not; and the money I saved buying the green ones let me fill a few more holes in the album!

You would be looking at the following Dansco Albums: Jefferson Nickel Without Proof (1938 - 2005) 7113http://www.valleycoin.com/product_i...ducts_id=722$20.97 Jefferson Nickel Without Proof (2006 - Date) 7114http://www.valleycoin.com/product_i...cts_id=31297$16.77 These are the albums without proof only issues. From experience, if you start with folders you will move over to albums such as the ones linked above over a period of time. I have the 2 linked albums to house my circulation finds. The nickels did reside in folders until about a year ago..

Don't jump at trying to purchase a Dansco Album. If you go to Google and type in coin Albums, you would find many, many manufacturers. And as already mentioned, Wizard has some for about $5 which is not much more than some Folders. If you go to the Whitman web site you would find that Whitman is owned by Harris and they manufacturer Albums and Folders under 3 different names. If there are any coin shows or coin stores in your area, you may want to check to see if they have any used ones for sale.

I bought my first Whitman folders when I was a kid in the 60's. They were for Lincoln cents. I still have both of them but the older coins in the first folder eventually found their way into my current album which is pretty old too.
I've upgraded my coins overtime but I'm sure some of the coins I got in circulation before I was ten are still in my album. (That's kind of a nice thought.)
As for the second folder, I never removed the newer coins and they are still in the folder after over 40 years. The coins look fine, the folder doesn't appear to have done any harm to them, although I haven't popped them out to have a look at the other sides.
