Considering total mintage for the 3 years x 2 denominations = 659,693, and I'm only aware of the destruction of the approximately 215,000 (but if someone else has knowledge of other quantities being destroyed from another time period, please share), I would hypothesize that there are roughly 445,000 out there. That being said, there's no telling how many remain in Canada. Aside from many international buyers scooping up quantities of the hoard that were publicly released in 2012, I've heard (unconfirmed) rumours over the years that some of the gold pieces accompanied some of our troops when they were deployed during the war.

Any ideas what a $5 1914 and 1913 hand select might fetch today, as it came from the RCM?

It really depends on the grade (and grader), but the 1914 should fetch a premium over the 1913.

secrecy in RCM reports is when you want to hide facts!..i would like someone to show me hard evidence they have melted the left over gold hoard........Ive not seen any evidence so far and I would suspect that we could expect another announcement to the effect that more premium grade gold BOC coins have been discovered and will be made available to us.....at the previous rates of course!......so if anyone out there has some hard printable evidence they have indeed melted the rest of the original hoard please let us see it......as far as skip79s conspiracy evidence goes ..we all know what the RCM said..but actions speak louder.the key words are WILL MELT......they simply havent melted the hoard and the longer they wait the chances grow bigger that they wont melt them...i mean would you melt a 1914 gold 5.00 coin? when u can get 500 for it? not b likely

I would like to think the RCM stayed true to their word and melted them, but it's hard for me to beleive that they wouldn't capitalize on it somehow. Maybe we'll see a modern proof version based on the old design and made from the melted coins? Sounds like something they would do, although it likely would have happened by now.

im not privy to insider info on the RCM decisions so I'mgoing on gut feelings which reflect human nature and greed when I doubt the RCM veracity on their promise to melt the remaining gold hoard. If they did follow through on this promise I suspect that it may be the largest meltdown of a gold hoard in the last century. I think they must be having a serious debate over this issue which is preventing them from carrying out the act. They could easily change their minds and announce a further release giving all kinds of plausible excuses. The low price of gold ...the fact that the higher grades havent really damaged trends prices that much if at all..the fact that the 5.00 coins sold out in weeks...and the obvious fact that they made a killing on the release and why not make another pile of money from this ultra rare hoard ...who wouldnt buy more of these coins if they were offered?..especially the 5.00 coins....so I'mgoing to stick to my challenge for someone to show me the hard evidence that the RCM has melted these coins....if they had you can bet it would make the Numismatic News pretty fast...looking at the above table by purelywasted it would seem plausible that they would make another release of the remaining 5.00 gold coins and the 1912 10.00 coins in the higher grades only and possibly the 1913/14 10.00 coins in the highest grades they could find...because the market would be there despite any criticism they would receive....the remaining numbers arent really that high except for the 13/14 10.00 coins....they should have released more in the first place and I think they must realize this was a big error...

I have been amazed at how well the $10 gold coins have done, I have seen the graded ones go in HA's for upwards of $2500. I would welcome another release, as I would really like a 1913 @ $500 to complete by set of $5.

If the RCM melts these coins, it will be largest numismatic mistake since we (USA) melted our gold coins in 1937. The U.S. government could have made billions off selling those coins in later years.

Those of you who are RCNA members, should read the Part II of the interview with Brian Cornwell, in this month's CN Journal... I never knew until I read that, that Brian spent three months in Ottawa, grading and sorting all those coins for the Royal Canadian Mint... the coins that were selected for these sets, and those that were selected for melting/refining.

It has been a couple of years now since the Bank of Canada hoard of gold coins have been released. In looking at the PCGS population reports I see some interesting numbers. Most notable is the 1914 $10 issue. Prior to the release there were a few coins that graded 64 and one at 65 with none higher.Today there are 3646 at 64/64+, 336 at 65/65+ and 7 at 66. You would think that you would see more of these in the marketplace
