179x coins can be had reasonably but be careful: they are like potato chips, you can't stop at one.

Heh heh heh, yeah... Today I 'just took a look' at some 179x coins. I didn't buy anything but I bet within a year I will. Right now I'm still sorting, examining, and cataloging the family stash. And a couple more bags just appeared... I'd wondered why there weren't more Morgans in the horde. Found 'em

I think jealous would be an appropriate term for most of the people reading this thread. You will have the opportunity to learn so much. I'm sure if you need help you will find plenty of volunteers here.

I'd be jealous of me too. Let me assure you, I very much appreciate the opportunity to look and learn about these coins. My brother and I will likely end up keeping a few more than we were already given, yay. Since I dove into the deep end of the coin pool and am learning more each day, we're definitely not going to just take the rest of it to the local dealer and get paid based on melt. [abrupt topic change alert] Now that I'm also hooked on examining pocket change, having sorted and provisionally examined many many pounds of accumulated change this week, I almost bought some rolls while at the bank yesterday. Came to my senses though-- there's time for that later. My enthusiasm was somewhat dampened when I learned that my bank requires bulk coins to be rolled (and labeled with my name and account number). I don't think any banks in my area have a counter/sorter machine. After sorting my accumulated change and learning of the rolling requirement, I decided what to do with my current 'face value' piles. My office Christmas party is tonight. I'm going to count it and put it in a big jar and give it to the person who comes closest to guessing the $$. I'm up extra early this morning to do that. Think I'll just weigh them by denominations rather than actually count since time is short. [and another topic change] I can see that it would be wise to send some of the more valuable coins to a TPG for slabbing. I should start a list of candidates. Right now I think there are probably 10-20 coins which should be sent but that number may rise. I've looked at PCGS and NGC several times and can't decide which one is the better deal-- and which membership package to buy. Guess I'll browse the TPG threads this weekend and crunch some numbers. I can't WAIT to go home and see these 'new' bags of coins which had been separated from their sisters. Flying home on Christmas eve. My first order from Wizard Coin Supply is supposed to arrive there today so I'll have a bunch of mylar flips and polyethelene bags waiting, plus Verdicare to treat some of those ailing coppers. (big thank you to Wizard for expediting the processing) Happy Friday everyone! I love my new CCF family.

Adrenaline rush... I had wondered why there weren't more Morgans in the collection. I only brought 3 back to my house to study. I forgot that there were 30 more I left at Mom's house. Cursory exam showed no particularly valuable dates. Here's my mistake-- one of many. Over Thanksgiving I was trying to sort thousands of coins so that we could take them to the local dealer. For the first few days I was using a book (yeah, a paper book, not the Red Book, just something from Barnes&Noble) and that book turned out to be wildly incomplete and often inaccurate. Partway through my Thanksgiving sorting extravaganza I started looking online for better info and came across PCGS and this wonderful forum. Since then my understanding has grown exponentially even though I'm still pretty low on the learning curve. But back to the Morgan saga... I came across a handwritten list of various coins that I did not bring back to my home for further study. On that list I had written the dates of the Morgans left behind. There's a 1893-S on that list I just checked the PCGS chart... I can't wait to take a look at that one over Christmas! Plus, Mom found another container of Morgans. Fingers crossed for some good dates and interesting VAMS.

If there was any doubt before, that doubt has been removed. I'm officially off the deep end. Witness: while passing through the Miami airport just now, I stopped at Sbux for some Via packets. Saw rolls of coins in the register and bought a few. Just because, you know...

Whoohoo, the 1893-S Morgan looks real and is undamaged! Only AG3 or G4 but it's still a great find. Checked what diagnostics I could in this worn state... Guess we'll send this one off for slabbing. Plugged in the new endoscopic scope but have to overcome a few obstacles to get it functioning properly on my Mac-- right now everything comes out mirror imaged. Hope to get that working in the next day or two because I have LOTS of coins to photograph. I'll post pics of the 1893-S ASAP, hopefully tomorrow. Looked through the newly found stacks of Morgans. 1921... all 55 of them. P, S, and D. No PLs, no MS, but perhaps some XFs. The lack of variety of dates was bit of a let down but I checked Vamworld and wow, looks like it will take some time to inspect them for VAM purposes. So there's that to look forward to :). Total of 86 Morgans :) Also found 66 more Peace dollars, half 1922, half 1923, mostly mid-grade and low grade. Mom is happily shocked. I will definitely be keeping a portion of the collection to start my own :) It's been fun 'discovering' these coins. I'm sure I'll buy an occasional coin but for now my thrill is in discovery so I'll probably become more of a pocket hunter or roll hunter.

Congrats man - lots of options to go with. You could always keep a roll or two of the best Morgan's and Peace dollars, sell the rest and use that $$ to buy a couple key dates. I've been crazy with the pocketchange too. When I go over to family and friends houses, I've been asking if I can "rifle" through their change. Found a couple of Wheats on Christmas Eve at my G-ma's house. I'm having way too much fun. My wife has had to tell me several times - "Enough with the coins!" It's amazing how much there is to learn about something that's mostly been taken for granted for so long, and how much excitement can come from it.

Having more or less sorted the Mercuries, I'm back to the Buffaloes now, probably a little more than halfway done with the first-pass sorting. This whole 'sorting' thing keeps changing as I learn more. With the Buffs, I had started by sorting by date/mm, examining each coin (including micro) as I went. That was very inefficient. I'm going to finish the pile with just an in-hand check, maybe quick micro if the date is almost readable. Then I'll go back date-by-date to look for varieties. With good lighting and in-hand inspection, I am quickly checking for readable date/mm, number of feathers, any leg varieties, rotation errors, Cuds, planchet flaws. Dateless coins are put in separate piles if there is a mint mark, 2 feather, wavy ribbon, or close ribbon. And 3 or 3/12 legs, but I"ve yet to find any of those. I think that covers the basic sorting pretty well. I sure love sorting. Is that weird? Once I've finished the sorting and examining these coins there will be a void to fill. So I'll take up roll hunting :) Pocket change hunting, more likely. Mine and friends. There are a few local businesses who will let me go through their change and who will buy back the coins after I've examined them. Beats taking rolled coins with my name and account number to the bank!

Thanks for the update. This is been a fun adventure to follow! You are much better than I am - I have twenty, yet a mere twenty, mercs to go through and I keep getting distracted so I have yet to finish them.
