Hello,

I am new here but like many of you who have posted in this forum, I believe capped bust halves are one of my favorite coins. I have been visiting coin shops (about 8 so far) and attended a coin show recently. However, I haven't found anything that compares to the prices on ebay ( by quite a bit, actually).

I have read a lot here about purchasing on ebay, so thanks everyone for the advice. I went ahead and bought two. I will post the pictures when I receive them so you can tell me how I did.

johnny. CBH is also one of my favorite series. You should check this out if you haven't already done so.

It is always nice to see the coin in person before you purchase it and to take the coin home with you the same day. I am among those who love the Capped Bust coinage (I bought a few attractive examples on ebay for my 7070.) It is nearly impossible to assemble a set in Uncirculated condition today. I would recommend looking for "Dale Friend" on YouTube who showcases his all time finest collection of these early coins, including the Flowing Hair/Draped Bust portraits.

Look for the 80 year old dealer at small coin shows for comparable deals to ebay.

Capped Bust Halves are also one of my favorite series since its fairly easy and inexpensive to pick up examples for each year of production (except for 1815 which is the key for the set). Most of the years had huge mintages and there are still a lot out there although mostly in lower grades. Finding the earlier dates in the series will be more challenging while the years in the mid to late 1820's through the 1830's are common. Something else to consider is that most CBH's have been cleaned, dipped, or otherwise messed with overtime to a point where there is a very small percentage of original examples.

Congratulations on your purchase and I too look forward to see your new coins. Capped bust halves are one of my favorite coins. I'm missing the 1815 and based on price may never be able to buy a nice one. I think the bust half prices are on the rise over the last few years, but still a good value.

When your coins arrive hold them in your hand and admire their beauty. The down side is the addiction that will follow.
