Sorry to hear the bad news. Hopefully you will be able to get your money back.
I was wondering if it could possibly be VAM-43a. I am still relatively inexperienced in this area but looking at the picture on vamworld the date position appears to match, the die crack looks like it could be the same though in the beginning stages, and the striations within liberty seems to match.

I would contact the seller and tell him you think it may indeed be a fake. If he argues the point, tell him then you will be sending it in to be authenticated. Shoot it off to ANACS. If it comes back fake, then you have the proof of it and try again with the seller. Aside from all that, nothing you can do really.
If that is indeed a fake, I would have been fooled on it as well.

If it's authentic thats certainly a high grade for such a rarity.

We'll see what happens. Not sure if this will get me anywhere but this is what I did...
1) I contacted the seller and explained the situation. They seemed surprised and said they were told it was real. Well I told them that IT ISN'T and that I am taking it to a few recognized dealers just so they could have a look... I believe we already deciphered that it's fake so I don't see a reason to have them look at it but I will do so anyways and see what they say/recommend to do. Send it off or not waste my money cause it's 100% fake. Whatever.
2) I contacted the FBI in Washington to get a general idea of what can be done in a situation like this with an Alleged counterfeit coin. Especially since fakes are supposed to say COPY. I was told to call my local branch and further discuss this in the morning.
3) I have logged all discussion. I have all the emails and text messages sent back and forth stored.
4) I'll most likely go to the restaurant where the transaction took place and ask if they have cameras. If they do, the footage might be called for in the near future.
5) Assuming it's the guys real name... I have that and the phone number obviously.
6) When I spoke with the seller I also ask for the name of the "COIN SHOP" he took it to that told him it was "GENUINE". I sent them an email and will most likely call to see if he "INDEED" visited them and if they remember this guy/coin. True or not, I'll find out soon....
I don't think I missed anything... Guess we'll see what happens.
I did miss something.... I have saved screenshots of his current listings on craigslist that depict his phone number... Also have a screen shot of the listing he had up of the 89cc morgan... It has the pictures of the front\back,again his number and the craigslist posting ID

The guy should give you your money back, if not just sue him for it in small claims court or tell him you will if he wont give you a refund. I'm on the fence for the fbi thing, unless you think that hes running a ring and doing this to a lot of people criminal prosecution will do nothing besides potentially put him in jail or give him an arrest record.
To be fair it did have a lot of people here fooled too or unsure, if the websites unsure its not unreasonable to assume that others (seller included) are as well. If you really want the proof I would agree send it to ANACS and see what it comes back as.

Try searching the sellers name on various search engines. Perhaps if they have a long record of scamming people you may find instances of other transactions that might be useful if you decide to take legal action against them.

Quote: Is it possible for this thing to come back anything other than FAKE? Its possible that the coin itself is real, just that the mint mark is fake or that its been altered in some way as opposed to just being an outright fake

If it is real, it would come back on the holder showing added MM. I don't see anything that stands out as outright fake to me.

I believe the coin is real, and the possibility that it's a real CC is very small but not zero. It would likely be a real chore to prove it real; if it came to it, I would trust nobody in the TPG business except John Roberts at ANACS to make the final determination.

here's what I did today. I called the alleged shop that the seller had taken the coin to and asked them if they remember him coming in. the guy said he doesn't but then they have so many coins coming through there that is hard to keep track. the guy did mention that all dies are produced in Philadelphia and it's a possility that it is still real. I called up anacs spoke with a gentleman named Paul. he told me to send pics in. So I did

I also sent pics to a local PCGS authorized dealer. I'm curious to see what he says

Great educational thread.
I hope you will be able to get your money back (or, even better, find out that the coin is real after all).
Good luck !

I think you should be able to get your money back... And the grading fee if you send it in and it comes back as we suspect.. & if not I'd have to assume you could take some kind of legal action... I really hope so at least! Is it just me or does it strike you as weird that the coin shop dude "they brought it to" doesn't remember that coin? I understand they have tons of traffic but come on now... It was an 1889CC!! I have a hard time believing they wouldn't remember that.. It's not a common thing people are bringing in daily.... I don't care if I saw 500 people a day I'd remember someone handing me that coin for years!!? Right? Am I alone on that? Lol. As always, keep us posted!
