I meant what about counting them, would that really help clarify anything. Also yes the die clash is there except mine is continued on to the second big leaf of the wreath.

Quote: Is a die crack something that doesn't usually appear of counterfeits? They can be found on counterfeits but from what I have read they tend to not be as crisp or sharp as cracks on genuine coins. Counting the reeds could help to authenticate the coin. I know for some series the number of reeds sometimes varies from mint to mint but I wasn't sure if it was also true with morgans. I took a look in a book I have on Morgan dollars there happens to be a chart with a reed count for each date and mintmark combination. According to it, it should be 177 for the 89-CC.

Rob could you post that closeup of the die crack on this forum as well, it may be useful for the VAM experts here. I wish you the best of luck.

I don't think it's a die crack. I hope it's not a die crack - none is known there on an 1889-CC.
Rob, you should count 177 reeds on this coin.

I just acquired a 1884cc. I posted it yesterday, and it has a die crack on the E also.

Wow.. I'm so sorry Rob! Definitely thank you for a very educational post, I had no idea about the reed count for this coin! Are you going to try to contact the seller? D0ubl3Eagle- thanks for letting me/us who didn't know that counterfeits CAN have die cracks like that.. Because honestly I would have had no idea otherwise, had I seen a nice key with a crack it would have swayed my opinion towards buying it.. That's why I love this site! So many people who know more than I do teaching me new things daily!!

The die crack is very similar to 1889-P VAM-9, as is the date. The detached leaves noted in VAM-9's detail pics match this coin, as well, and no 1889-CC coins appear to have that feature. I'm afraid this might add up to be a very good indicator that this is an added mint mark.

Quote: Any chance of a return/ refund? . Quote: Are you going to try to contact the seller? What would I say? Gimme my money back? I mean. 1) I have emails proving I talked with him. 2) I have his number and I believe it to be a real one... Not a temp one... I say this because he is selling a few items on craigslist currently... He uses the same number for all the adds.. Plus one of the ads is for a car... I don't think you can counterfeit a car. 3) Text message conversation proving we interacted and email states price agreed on. What can I do... Report to police?

Added mintmark--that sucks --sorry man. Just checked Redbook--what a value difference between a 1889-P and 1889-CC!
