I like to cherry pick in coin shows and shops and I am sure other would do the same, so I don't feel I have done anything immoral in this case if I were to find a 16-D dime in a $3 BIN box.
If I was to buy from somebody who have no knowledge about coin value and trying to take advantage of them, that would be another story.

I feel I did nothing wrong here, because all an employee had to do was take the time to sort through the box, but they did not want to take the time to do it. Now if it were in a case, with a 2x2 marked 1916-D, and the price was only $5 and I bought it, I would feel bad for taking advantage of the person in that case. Very late to this thread ... writing to offer my hopes it comes back from ANACS as authentic ... then we can have a celebration.
I have no ethical issues at all with your $3 purchase ... the sellers were a retail business who could have taken the time to know what they were selling.

Hey 1916 D Merc - don't worry about buddycat being sore. You got a great deal by keeping your eyes open. There's nothing wrong with what you did. Nice pick-up on that Merc!

Congratulations! Authentic and beautiful. I agree that there is nothing wrong with your purchase... If shop owners don't want to take the time to know about their merchandise, it isn't your responsibility to do it for them.
You now own a real treasure!

who's sore. If it was my dime, I would sell it and not think twice about it and go back to that box and look for more good stuff or just buy the whole box. I would keep some and sell others. I like to buy in bulk. The local dealer here has a box full of large cents and a big plastic tub of partial horned Buffalo nickels and want to buy all of them.

Wait, I'm trying to think here... grade 3 is fine? So it's a 2000 dollar coin for 3 dollars?

Wow, that's just amazing! That's some great luck you had there! Now I wanna search my local pawn shop's junk silver bins again to see if there's something good in there. Probably not gonna find a 1916-D but maybe a 1921 or something good like that.

Awesome find - Congratulations. I remember the feeling when I found my 1916-D Merc. Quote: nickelseacher - I have no ethical issues at all with your $3 purchase ... the sellers were a retail business who could have taken the time to know what they were selling. You paid the price he was asking for. It is the sellers responsibility to know what they are selling, just as much as it's the buyers responsibility to know what they are buying.

Great find and congratulations - that Merc set is all down hill from here! My '16-D looks exactly like yours in almost every way, and I sure paid more than $3 !
